Cruise Control

On most cars, you need to push to turn on cruise control but still need to press down in order to set the speed. I'm wondering why one should have to press down to set it, why not just have it set automatically whenever you take your step off the gas and let cruise turn off normally when you step on the brakes.

Seems like a useless feature to me. Can anyone enlighten me as to why you need to press down to "set" cruise control speed.

How does the system know you want the cruise on and arent lifting your foot off the gas because your coming up on a slower moving car?

Hm my car you need to push the main power switch then push the set button. If you dont push set its not going to keep a speed. Also on mine if you push the breaks it doesnt turn off the main power switch just the set button. What car brand are you talking about? Is it by any chance toyota?

Actually you don't...

In a lot of cars you and single and double tap the "set/accel" button and it will go up 2.5 and 5mph accordingly. It's even in the owners manual

I'm glad you don't engineer cars for a living.

Good God...could you imagine the car wrecks...takes foot off gas to slow for stop light...car continues 50 mph speed!!!!!!! ...must now slam on brakes to slow car down!!!

I think you mean that turning on the cruise "power" should set the speed at that time?

In my Acura the cruise "power" button is on the dash, the set accel etc are on the wheel. I wouldn't want to have to reach to the dash every time I want to set or change my cruise speed. The OLD GMs had the activate button in the end of the turn signal stem, which was weird...

what i dont get is why would you turn off the cruise control, i mean its not going to do anything until you set the speed you want... and if you wanted to stop using cruise control, just press the cancel button

some people might hot the set button by accident and not realize they aren't slowing down until it's too late.

man.. there really must be some idiots out there, cause on most cars it takes some effort to press the button, its not a button that you press effortlessly
