It's clear that this is the only thing you are interested in, so I'd say the GN is right for you.[/QUOTE]

True, the GN is very much a single purpose automobile. Dreadfully fast but handling and braking that can best be described as adequate. My Accord six speed is far superior in the handling and stopping department. I suppose that's some of the appeal of owning a car such as the GN, or any other older muscle or super car. I enjoy driving my Accord, but have FUN with the GN. Regardless, I wouldn't recommend one as a daily driver, due to both the rapidly escalating values and the maintenance requirements.

Incidentally, and perhaps somewhat off topic, I've always considered my Accord six-speed coupe to be somewhat of sleeper. Attractive yet understated at the same time. A few factory goodies in an otherwise vanilla wrapper. The car was debadged when new and I think it adds only more to the appeal.

The AV6 6MTs are sleepers as even a number of car buffs never pick up on how quick they can be. Only a little red 'V6' badge alludes to the mid-low 14 second potential!

Terry sorry about the white trash thing. I think the image portrayed in my neck of the woods is a bit different however than it is there. No offense.

No less than seven sensors control the engine management. The cars have coil packs instead of distributors. And of course the turbo charger itself requires routine care. Because of the extremely low compression ratio to allow the massive amounts of boost the turbo-charging system created the braking system is also of a different nature and is very expensive to repair. Because of the low compression the car's brakes were servo assisted and opposed to vacuum assist. Parts are no longer available.
Is this also true of the Turbo TransAm GTA's and GMC Cyclone's and Typhoons that are powered by the same engine? Or is the engine different in these models?

Turbo TA (like the GN/GNX/Regal T-Type) have the boosted 3.8L. The Syclone/Typhoon have a turbo Vortec 4.3L V6.

I thought they were the same.

No worries. Throughout the years I've had the good fortune to own numerous interesting cars, and have had the opportunity to meet and become friends with a number of fellow enthusiasts. I gave up long ago identifying one's interests and social status by the type of automobile he or her owns. Interests are varied, and inevitably so are the choice of automobiles.

Absolutely correct. Sounds like you like the TR's! The Turbo TA was essentially the GN engine, but with the smaller chevrolet cylinder heads to accommodate the the lower hood of the F-body. The turbo regals had the large port/valve cylinder head, identified as an 8445 casting.

The advantage of the Typhoon/Scylone platform was the all wheel drive system. It's fun so see one of these things smoke away from the tree with all four wheels spinning.

Sadly enough, there is a 2-3 month wait to get into their shop

I recall when the TTA came out (I think I still have the brochure) that it was pretty much the fastest car GM produced (exc. ZR1).

I would not mind picking up one on the cheap and just sticking it in my garage for occassional runs at the track and car shows. It really is a terrific collector car.

Hmm... sound like a decent bang for the buck for $12K... Altho' that one looks pretty much stock, so while it might be tempting to mod it, it's probably better off left as is...

Interesting cars. In a few years I suspect those thing are going to take a jump in value. I remember hearing a few years ago that the TTA was the only car to pace Indy unmodified. I guess up to that point and for a few years afterwards actual pace cars were modified for track duty. I'm sure in recent years a few actual pace cars are unmodified. The TTA's didn't have a governor like the Buicks did, shutting them down at 124 mph.

Not meaning to further hijack this thread, I recall the brochure indicating that the top speed was 153mph. To some extent (and IMHO), the TTA and Supra MKIV are soul mates.

I don't remember exactly, but they were over 150 mph. In the late 80's that was impressive. I think that as the GN's and T's incease in value the TTA's will certainly follow. In many ways it better utilized Buick's turbo 3.8 than the regals by using a chassis more orientated towards handling and braking. Neat cars.

teranfon.......

the picture you posted of the GN looks very familiar to me like i have seen it before while me and my dad was looking to purchase one. my dad owned a GN a long time ago and then sold it. he own a speed shop at the time and practically owned every thing that was fast back in the 80's since he only kept cars for a few months and then got something else. the GN is a great car and we've looked periodically to find one as a fun weekend car but also know the value of the car itself.

Hi AS3.0CL
Nope, I'm the original owner of the old girl. And no, never had the 86' for sale. The 86' and 87' look pretty much the same, the 86' having a chrome grille shared with the 85'. It's getting harder and harder to find a nice example that hasn't been restored. My 86' is basically original except for tires, serpentine accessory belt, battery, and painted driver's door. If you can find one soon, I recommend picking it up.
