Question Can you tell the difference between the two tints?

...I can, and it bothers me a bit.

The rear windshield and two rear triangle mirrors came tinted from the dealership. It's 20% but I'm not sure whether it's metallic, dyed, or ceramic tint. I had the front two side windows tinted with Llumar 20% metallic and the tint has set, but the difference in tint color and darkness seems to bother me since it's so distinct.

You can't see major detail since these pics were taken on a 2 megapixel BlackBerry and it was a very misty morning.

I like the Llumar metallic tint a lot better since it's not as dark and has a sheer look to it. I've had Llumar tint on all my cars and have used the same tint shop. The original tint that was already on there looks like basic dark tint but I'm not sure/can't tell if it's metallic, dyed, or ceramic.

Should I -
  • Remove rear windshield and rear side tint and re-tint with Llumar
  • Remove front Llumar tint and find original tintshop to match rear tint

Would I mess up the defrost components on the rear windshield if I remove the tint? Which tint looks better to you guys?

Yep, I can tell the difference. I like the tint on the front windows better. I'd replace the rear tint.

Leave the rear windshield and just get the two rear windows re-done.

the front tint looks like a metallic tint hence the extra sheen, where as the rear looks more flat.
the front tint looks a whole lot better.

btw... no CF roof?!

naw... I like having an actual moonroof over the cool look of the CF roof. Weight difference is only -45lbs and I don't track the car so no difference to me.

sick ride. i actually like the back tint better cus it's matte and looks darker and matches the black window trim...just my preference. what i first thought of when i saw the pics was that the 2 front windows were tinted lighter which many ppl do on coupes. i don't think it matters if u match the fronts or the backs as long as it gets matched so it's uniform.

I like the rear tint better without the sheen. Just my opinion but I'd redo the front...

Yup, I can tell
...and I have the same problem as you...
I had our FX35 front windows tinted to match the factory tint on all the rear windows, and it looks alright, but it isn't perfect and it bothers me. So far, my wife and friends all think I'm crazy, but I can tell, that's the problem.

Your solution:
If you're looking for the cheapest option - have the front windows re-done by the Dealers tint guy
My personal opinion would be to do what Sarlacc said and just have the triangles replaced/leave the rear alone
Or, if you're really picky and $$ is no object, have the rear triangles and rear windshield removed and redone with your preference. If your shop knows what they are doing, there will be no damage to your defrost what-so-ever.

Let us know what you decide to do...

Yeah - I agree. I didn't notice how much of a difference the two tints were until the Llumar up front set after a few days. My usual tint shop quoted me $180 to remove/install the rear tint with the Llumar. The Llumar in front cost me $100. Only reason I'm concerned with the Llumar metallic is that some guys are having issues with metallic tint and BMW's comfort access (keyless entry/start). I don't have any current issues with comfort access or AM reception.

Funny how I get more replies here than on the M3 forums. You guys love me more I guess

i have my windows metallic tinted as well. Prior to getting it done, i had read on different forums that it may affect radio functions, and/or radar detectors and other stuff. but i have yet to talk to anyone that have actually had any of these problems. granted i don't have the smart key, but i think those problems are few and far between.

How about I come over and take a big shit on the roof of your car. That way no one will notice how crappy the tint looks.

Oh let me know when you're ready so I can load up on Taco Hell, beer, oh and some corn. I figured if you are going to have a big steaming turd on the roof of your car it might as well have some corn it.
