C&D - Infiniti Readies Direct Injection for M37 and G37, Unsure About New Q

Nissan’s luxury arm dishes on its plans for the future.

http://www.caranddriver.com/re..._news

The windblown puddle of mercury known as the Infiniti Essence concept car shown at this year's Geneva show tells volumes about where Nissan's luxury division is headed both stylistically and technically. The twin-turbo 3.7-liter direct injection V-6 in the Essence will debut, sans turbos, in the redesigned M sedan due in early 2010, making about 340–350HP. The complex direct-injection technology, in which fuel is injected directly into the cylinder rather than in the intake ports as is more common, most likely will also make its way into the G37 coupe and sedan as mid-cycle upgrades before the cars are completely redesigned in about three years. Besides making more power, gasoline direct-injection technology is also needed to meet tightening emissions and fuel-economy regulations around the world.

Honda definitely needs to come out with a new direct injected DOHC V6. The J series is way overdue for a redesign.

Anyone dare to take a guess at the engine code? VQ37DI? Heh. Wonder if it'll require a radical enough change to the heads to do a engine family rename. Hello again, Wards.

I was emphasizing how much I would want that =). Obviously if I sold both my kidneys, I'd replace them with somebody else's, with or without force.

Cool Q Update

Infiniti dealers across the country have been desperately waiting for a new Q flagship sedan to take on the likes of the Lexus LS and BMW 7-Series to be announced, however, it appears their wish may never come true.

The last Q model ended production back in 2006 and at the time the base sticker price of the car was $58,750. The current range topper in Infinti’s lineup is the latest 2011 M56, which starts at $57,550, so there’s definitely room for a more upmarket model. However, Infiniti’s vice president of its global business unit, Toru Saito, explained to Automotive News that the Q45 never sold well in the U.S. and that a more expensive model will be even harder to sell. There’s also the fact that the latest 2011 Infiniti M is almost the same size as the old Q45.

All is not lost, however. Saito went on to explain that the new M will "play a flagship role" to gauge demand for an even more expensive model by seeing how many people buy the most expensive M with all the options boxes ticked.

However, the top priority now for Infiniti is to generate more global appeal. Infiniti is no longer a brand isolated to the U.S. and is currently sold in Korea, China, Russia and most of Western Europe. Another major focus is environmental and efficiency challenges, which the upmarket Nissan division hopes to address with a new all-electric compact car.

What'll you bet Acura is headed the same way, with the TL essentially being the top-of-the-line sedan? I knew this was going to happen when they stopped making the Q, I called it four years ago.

But as long as they are making cars like the G and M, who cares? And that coupe....

Where's Acura?
