Buying an 06 Passat 2.0T

I was thinking about buying a Passat for my gf, with around 42k miles on it. i know that VW has been having reliability issues with their cars, and what not.

i was wondering if u guys know any1 who owns/owned a passat, and how much they liked/hated it?

We had an A4 2.0T and it was a great car. If you were looking at the 1.8T I would likely advise you against it, but the 2.0T is a completely different beast and you should enjoy it.

If you're still a little worried you can always scoop up an extended warranty. Probably not a bad thing to have on any used car...

the dealership is gonna give me a 2 year bumper-bumper, but im gonna push it towards 4

Auto or stick?

A clutch on a Jetta is $1500 at the dealer ... Just FYI.

2.0T....FTW...stay away from the 1.8.

Reliability has vastly improved over the past few years with VW and Audi.

With the extended warranty you mentioned, sounds like you have a great deal on a great car.

i was looking at the 1.8, but like u said there was some bad shit happening with that car...

Hmmm...the 2.0T engine is pretty solid, but out of all VW's with that engine, the '06 Passat tends to scare me the most. I believe they're known to have a lot of issues and judging from the list of TSB's, I'd examine it further...

i've been looking on that site... and looks to me like most of the people like it.

anywho, if i can get the extended warranty then ill get it... hopefully i can knock down the price a couple g's

Nice..... If the dealer can give you more warranty, then you'll be good. You'll have an exact date for the "for sale" sign (the day warranty ends).

Definitely stay away from the 1.8T if you can. I knew two people with the 1.8T motor (one in a Jetta, one in a Passat). They both had a good amount of issues, however, they still loved their cars. When the time came they traded their cars in for the new model Jetta and Passat respectively, except now they had the 2.0T engines... and they both have had completely different owner experiences and have fallen in love with the cars again.

My sister's 99 Passat 1.8T has actually been pretty reliable. It's got 152K miles right now and still going strong with great gas mileage. The only issues I've had with it is the ignition control module has gone out twice in the 4-5 years that she's had it. I also had to replace the rear passenger window regulator/motor assembly and that thing was pain in the ass somewhat. It's an auto so it also has sluggish acceleration from a dead stop but once it's up and running it drives fine. Other than typical maintenance and a few worn suspension parts due to the high miles I really haven't had to work on it. I'm gonna have the timing belt and water pump replaced soon though because she's gonna start commuting to the Bay Area in the coming months. (About 160 miles daily, roundtrip)

You wont have anything to worry about with the 2.0T. I have owned a Jetta with the 2.0T 6MT for 4 years now and it has been bullet proof. I am not sure how the performance is in the passat but in the lighter Jetta its been fun driving it everyday for the last 4 years.

Volkswagen has announced that it will recall some 25,594 examples of its 2006-2009 Jetta over a potential driveshaft issue. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, cars with the company's 2.0-liter inline-four may have driveshaft cover plates that weren't manufactured properly, with the consequence that their screws may not be torqued correctly. If the screws back out, drivers may experience a knocking sound while in motion. In the extreme, the driveshaft could conceivably detach from the gearbox, which could cause all kinds of problems that might lead to a crash.

Thanks for the link "AZuser".

I actually read that this morning on Autoblog. VW Canada is aware of the American recall and they dont expect it to affect Canadian models which is good. I have noticed that generally American recalls dont affect canadian models and vice versa.

The good thing is that this really has nothing to do with 2.0T in the passat that the OP is looking at so he should be fine.

I have only had two minor recalls on my Jetta (software update and headlight clips) other than that i am very impressed with the car being it was a completely redesigned first year (early) model.

^ Subaru's are generally pretty good, but do some reading b/c they can have their own issues as well. Also, be ready to fill up quite a bit

i have read up on the impreza, not the WRX STi, and it actually got better ratings on consumer report the the passat, and the mpg is much better as well
