Bonded Title or Finding the Previous Owner

My Problem: I bought my TL several months ago in full and waited nearly 3 months to get the title. Somehow in the process of moving, I lost the title to the car (I had not did all my paperwork, since I was moving to another state and didnt want to register the car twice, pay excess fees, etc). The dealer claims they are going to the previous owner to get the title, but to no avail thus far. I'm starting to get the feeling that I'm going to have to do something on my own to get the title. Has anyone had an experience like this? I keep hearing that I may have to get a bonded title, but its an expensive option . Is there a way to find out who the previous owner is?

Doesn't the state have a copy of the title? You should call the state title office to ask for a copy. That would have been my first move if I lost a copy of my title.

Again.....state title office will have a copy. Call and ask for it.

So the car is titled under the previous owner's name. The state should have a copy of said title with the VIN of the car. If you have a bill of sale from the dealership with the VIN on it, you now have the ID info needed to get a copy of said title. Should not be hard (depends on the state, it's pretty easy in Ohio).

Here's how it works in Ohio:

Contact the title division by letter. Compose a sworn notarized statement as to the facts pertaining to the purchase of the vehicle. Next, obtain a completed Out of State Inspection form. Make a copy of all papers that you have on the vehicle from the seller and mail to the Ohio BMV, Title Division, P.O. Box 16520, Columbus, Ohio 43216-6520. The inquiry will be reviewed by the Title Section and if approved, a letter of authorization will be issued.

Find something similar in the state you are talking about.
