Boiling sound coming from coolant?

OK so my girlfriend has a 1997 Plymouth Breeze. Like 75% of the time when she shuts off her car. About 15-20 seconds later it sounds like there is water boiling. So i was like wtf open your hood. Its coming from the engine coolant tank. If i open the cap you hear it coming from there perfectly. I pinched the hose coming from the tank just to see what would happen but nothing did. If you jiggle the tank it will stop just for like a split second.

Any suggestions?

It's running too hot, so you have to check the entire system. It could be partially clogged, failing thermostat, faulty fan, bad heater core, or just need a good flush.

The first thing is to make sure the car isn't running too hot. I wouldn't entirely trust the factory gauge to give you an accurate reading. Anything else to make you believe the car is running hot?

If you are reasonably sure that the car isn't overheating, I would first try replacing the radiator cap. Perhaps it isn't within factory specification and allowing fluid to travel to the reservoir tank. In fact the "boiling" sound you refer to may just be noise of the coolant entering the tank. This would explain why the noise stops if you jiggle the tank.

gauges can be inaccurate.. do either a flush or make sure there's no bubbles and replace the rad cap (could be not holding pressure in the system anymore)

Sounds like there is air in the coolant system, search online to bleed the system.

common problem.....it may lead to big problems.

When cold check that the coolant is filled at the radiator and recovery tank.

Just start it up and if radiator hose pressures up quickly and level rises in or bubbles in reservior then it suggests strongly that a head gasket is allowing combustion exhast pressures to enter the cooling system. Fixing that early could save on a warped head or more than whatever is causing the trouble right now.

It's likely just the radiator cap. I had this happen on my suburban. A new cap fixed it. Open it up when cool add coolant, then replace the cap with a new one.

Well it sounds like you've got a leak or a significant lack of antifreeze. Opening the rad cap when the engine is hot typically results in a trip to the emergency room with 3rd degree burns.

Do you smell antifreeze or notice white smoke coming from the exhaust?
