BMW Dealers are funnie

Need a car w/in the next few months...i stopped by bmw in hopes of finding a e39 540...no dice; they had none at all..so i inquired abt a 2001 bmw 330ci they had w/31k miles and asking price of $30K....

i ask the salesperson to kindly run some numbers for me, but instead he just stands there and tells me off the top of the head that w/$2k total at signing, the monthly payment would be "around $525 per month" for a 36 month LEASE!...the salesman refused 2 go 2 the computer and check #s...instead, he scribbles my info on some random piece of paper at some other salesman desks and tells me that he'll call me when he gets more 330 coupes in

I then asked him abt an 03 m3 they had outside and he tells me(again off the top of his head ) that i'll have to come up w/$6500 at signing and the payments would be around "the low 8s each month" on a 36 month LEASE....

to say i was displeased would be an understatement...in my mind , i'm thinking i can get a NEW 04 TL (6spd/navi) lease for 42 months, w/just $1000 at signing for under $500 a month ....anyways, i didnt have such a fond experience at bmw...i guess they dont believe in 21 year old kids paying for their own bimmer w/their own money...i wonder if they would have treated me diff if i bought mommy and daddy w/me

If you dressed up in a suit they might have showed some more love.

I have trouble supporting dealers that treat people like shit regardless of your age or finacial status...I have been where you are, and if you want a BMW just go somewhere else. Do not let a couple of idiot's ruin your desire for a new BMW.

Bottom line is do not settle for less then you want...and treat every transaction like business. Leave your feelings at your girlfreinds house. There is no room for emotion when making a big money purchase.

GO with a 540 6 speed. If you never drove one, do it. You'll love the car, plenty of power, nice interior, nice exterior, and the best handling of practiclly any sedan. My family has had the same experiences with some dealers. They treat my father the same way at some places and he's 50 and has the money to buy the car. JMK out here in jersey was pretty good when my dad bought his first BMW. Good service and fair prices. M3's are gonna be expensive, but there are plenty of good deals on used 540s and 330s.

330Ci's are very handsome cars. I would probably go with the TL 6 sp for the price.

I would get a last gen 540 6spd with the M package. Friend has one, so fucking hot.

And the WORST and STUPIDEST mistake a car salesman can make is underestimating younger clients.

When i sold hondas, I would take every 17 years olds inquiries as serious as I would every 47 year old. It did me well, why, cause you never know.

Why go into a dealership in the first place? The only time I go into a dealership is to pick up the keys and the car at the END of the transaction. I do everything over email/fax...

However they do have a 2000 540i for sale.

in sales the biggest mistake is to judge your customer. its been my experience that the less financially stable looking people spend more $$$$ and are typically 10000x nicer to deal with. appearance should be taken into consideration, but judging customers before you get to know them slightly is stupid. garaunteed loss of sales. maybe car sale is diff. i can understand if they wouldn't bother to let u go test driving.

i bet he was just jealous cuz he cant afford that car himself and likes to rub in how expensive it is. he probably has a little dick. oh well sux for him.

You should have let me know, I'm on very good terms with Habberstad.....I know Eric H. well. The new dept is much better than pre-owned, the guys over there are a-holes.

Competition isn't bad, but I prefer Habberstad....like there service dept better.

That may not be far from the truth, it wouldn't pay to lease an 03 at this point due to the residual. An 04 would be cheaper to lease. The $6500 out of pocket sounds a little rich though.

You just happened to deal with an asshole. Habberstad out of all places knows that young guys, whether you bought it your own money, mom and dad paid for it, your grandmother left you money, whatever......they don't give a shit and don't jump to conclusions.

Habberstad is in a nice part of town, the people I deal with there aren't biased against people of any age. Been dealing with them for years.

thanks 4 the helpful insight my friend

I agree w/you...Habberstad's new car dept is soooo much better than their pre-owned dept;the people do a very good job in treating u rite

The 03 m3 lease took me by suprise...i checked the e46 boards and most seem 2 have gotten their NEW m3s for much lower payments per month and w/a lot less down..I concur, if someone was 2 lease an m3, it would make sense 2 get a new one

It doesnt bother me the way habberstad treated me, its just that i felt like i wasnt taken seriously, as if i was just wasting his time while he could have been just telling stories w/his coworkers

i live a few min. from them so if theres anyone i'd want 2 give business 2, they would have been my 1st choice...anyways we will see what the future holds

again, thanks 4 the kind words and help...drinks on me when i get ny next car

So i went home, the next day i went back, pulled in with pops 04 X5. Voula, they act differently. It ashame how they stereotype people by the car they drive, age, and clothing. oh wellz thats BMW for you

No matter where you go, some dealerships will judge you based on how you look and what you drive. When I shopping for a CLS a while back, I showed up in a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals while rollin' up in an Accord. Obviously, no one wanted to help some 29-year old dressed like that... till I pulled out my business card. Once they saw the letters D and R before my name, WHOA what a change in how they treat you... from 3rd world to 1st class in less than a second.

When I was at an Acura dealer, I saw a BMW 745 pull up, and a SURGEON stepped out in full green hospital gear! I couldn't help but laugh as about four salesman rushed over to him. I still to this day wonder what he bought.....

before i got my TL I was hell bent on getting a 330i, went to the dealer, Bayside BMW with my wife, asked to test drive a 330.
Dealer: why don't you test drive a 325?
Me: I don't want a 325, its got too little power, I want a 330
Dealer: No, a 325 has enough power for you
Me: How do you know what's enough power for me?

10 mins later after he said he would get a 330, he pulls up in a 325 for me to test drive & sits in the passenger seat. I said shouldn't my wife sit in the passenger seat? He said NO, he is not allowed to do that. I guess he doesn't know how great an influence women have on the car purchase decision. I drive it around complaining it is too slow for me, we go sit in his office and start talking about pricing a 330 with a sport package.. he starts pushing the premium package and other crap bringing the price to 40K. I told him to knock a few grand off... he told me to get a 325 if I want a cheaper car... total a-hole. The second we walked out we said NFW are we getting a car from this place. We go directly to Rallye Acura, the type s just came out, the dealer throws me the keys, says have fun, bring her back in 30 minutes.

The people at Acura typically seem to be nicer. I went to BMW and I could not even get someone out to help me, did not matter I did not want to spend that kind of money anyway on a BMW. Same at Lexus they think they have gold in the IS300. I mean 30k for a luxury car with cloth seats are you f---in serious?

Oh well I ended up with the car I wanted, at the price I wanted and I love to drive it every day...to me that is all that matters.

I will say this...the M3 is so sexy if I could afford to blow my wad on a car, this would be it. Gives me chills just thinking about it.

I got similiar treatment at the acura dealer. I showed up in my usual t-shirt, jeans and sneakers. Salesman was a younger guy but he figured out pretty quickly that I was there to buy, and not dick around. I wanted a price, I didn't want a test drive, I already drove a CLS at another dealership.

When we were doing the paper work with the financial chick, she asked if I was going to put down anything. She started some monologue about "not stretching yourself too thin", and trying to get me to finance more then I wanted. I had to tell her that I could buy the car w/ cash if I wanted too, and she finally figured it out.

I try to not "judge a book by it's cover", but it's obvious to me that many people do.

My wife is due for a new car and we're going to put some of it on the home equity loan. I'm VERY tempted to go to the dealer with a bunch of it in cash in a briefcase. Always wanted to do that. So if they treated me like shit I could just open it and say sorry... I was ready to make a sale today.... hehe.

in defence of the dealers... you have no idea how many <20 y/o come by a dealer on a Sat afternoon and want to take a Spec-V or whatever out for a test drive, and they have no intention of buying. If the salesman is out on a TD with some wannabe, then he's not avail to make a sale if someone 'serious' comes in.

Jeebus... I can't believe I'm defending the seller..this codiene I got is really good stuff!!

Before I bought my CLS i actually went to go buy a CLK320. I talked to one salesman who was cool as hell. I came back with my dad at night to finish the deal. That guy was busy and an assistant manager offered to help so i wouldn't have to wait. Anyways, we start talking numbers and I start negotiating on the price the guy gave me in the morning. The guy starts gettin shifty and finally says , "well, maybe a Mercedes isn't the car for you.." I was like WTF do you mean "the mercedes" isn't the car for me. My dad just stood back...he likes teaching me how to negotiate (he didn't want me to vuy the merc anyways). I basically went across the street to the Acura dealership bought the CL-S (cash), came back and talked to the manager and told him how his assistant manager fucked up a cash deal. The first salesmen had that deer in headlights look and the manage apologized profusely.
In the end it worked out better because the 320 sux ( i really wanted a 430. It is like buyng a 3 series ...what i really want is an M3.
