Back to Acura....NSX

On March 27th I took delivery on this beautiful 2004 Silver/Silver/Auto NSX (only 1 of 3 in this combo for '04) with 26K miles. Completely stock except for tint.

When I was 13, I saw my first NSX on the road and knew I had to have one. It was like love at first site.
Always told my friends/family that was my "dream car" and some day would own one.

In 2003 I bought a brand new Acura CL-S, but also joined NSXPrime just to drool over everyones cars.
Up until a couple months ago I would just browse the forums and hoped to have the opportunity to join the group one day.
The last 2 months I had been seriously looking and stumbled upon a For Sale ad, bought a plane ticket to go see it, and wired the money the next day.

A dream come true!

It's mint. The previous owners took amazing care of it and of course will do the same. The drive is amazing. Hate to say the ole "when it hits VTEC", but it really accelerates on a roll. With the motor right behind your ears, the note is so addicting. It actually takes bumps better than my lowered G. Some reason feels smoother.

I can't stop going out to my garage just to look at it every night. Haven't slept more than 5hrs a night for the last 2 months with such excitement and anticipation of the whole buying/receiving process. LOL

Congrats! Curious, why did you go with the auto?

Thanks Synth!
A few factors came into play. Price, condition, mileage, and the overall rarity of the combo made it a no brainer for me.

We had one traded in when I worked for Acura, most of the sales people and techs laughed and joked about the automatic NSX. I'd ask them what's the deal about an "automatic" NSX, the usual response was "duh, it's an automatic". My response was, go take it for a drive and attack an off ramp at 80 mph, it's still an NSX, that chassis doesn't care whether it has a clutch or not.

Enjoy the dream UNC, I've driven cars with 3 times the hp, doesn't matter, the NSX is a special car and marvelous to drive in any trim.

Wow. Congratulations, that thing is pristine. Keep it stock. It kills me when I see innocent NSXs modded to hell and back.

Agree. I don't care if it's auto or manual. Some people simply hate driving manual and this option was available when the car was new.

Thanks I appreciate it!
Aside from the factors I mentioned above, it didn't bother me to be manual. Like you said, I didnt buy the NSX to be a HP monster. Heck, my 09 G can probably beat this car in the 1/4. I am glad there are still some out there that understand and appreciate the auto/manual topic.

Same here to an extent. If it's tasteful then I OK with that but that's subjective. I will mostly be keeping it stock aside from maybe a few audio upgrades.

Personally, I'd want a stick for 2 reasons. First the NSX wasn't all that powerful so I feel I can be quicker with the manual. Second, the NSX gearbox is in my top 3 honda gearboxes with the S2000 and CLS 6MT as being an absolute joy to tow through.

When my knees give out in another 15-20 years I'd be perfectly fine with the auto though. I just think many of those who bash the auto NSX have never driven one (probably either auto or stick) and don't know the auto is still a hell of a car in its own right.

Thank you everyone!
I'll definately update along the way.

In roughly 4hrs worth of driving since last week, I've been asked if it was a corvette by a few different people

There's another severe problem with the auto NSX, I'm surprised no one has pointed out. Honda detuned the autos (both NA1 and NA2 versions).

The NA2 version went from having 290hp in manual form, down to 252 in auto form. Those ratings are both at the crank. It was claimed honda did this because they were unsure how the auto transmissions would handle the power over the long run. That is a big decrease!

Less hp, but when you drive them the difference seems about the same as any other auto to manual. The longevity side, I don't know, I don't own one. All I know is how they drive and quite frankly both seem a bit underpowered but they aren't straight line drag cars, they are cornering cars where high hp isn't necessarily an asset.

If you're trying to have fun driving an NSX in a straight line you're doing it wrong.

Also, the 290 hp motor was a 3.2 the automatic was a 3.0 so not really detuned, different powerplant.

I didn't know they transferred the 3.0L from the automatic NA1 into the automatic NA2. Regardless, it is detuned.

The 3.0L in the manual NA1 put down 270hp, but the auto was detuned to 252hp. Looks like the NA2 got the same detuned 3.0L for the auto version.

Your telling me you can't notice 40hp coming out of a corner? Come on, man. Everyone on AZ fights tooth and nail for an extra 5hp and swear they can feel it, but a near 40hp drop is unnoticeable? Must be magic under that hood!!

The difference definitely is not the same as going from any auto to manual. In the majority of cases, it's the same power plant for either transmission, but the losses are greater on the auto vs the manual. Here we are talking about a 38hp/14ftlb drop in power before the drivetrain losses are thrown into the equation. Not to mention autos weigh more than manuals also...

I will agree this car is not intended for straight line acceleration, however, acceleration is still a fundamental key component to a sports car.

Don't get me wrong- the OP purchased a BEAUTIFUL example of an NSX and it is becoming more and more difficult to find pristine condition ones like that. I wish they all still looked like that as opposed to being modded like crazy. But to call it equivalent to a manual version is a bit of a stretch. Although the autos are extremely rare, while I was looking for an NA2, the autos would sit for sale for a verrrrrry long time.

Edit: I just found a version very similar to OPs for sale (but manual). Extremely low mileage with, apparently, a bunch of the original plastic wrap on a bunch of parts. Asking price? 114k!!! The car was only 90k new!! Fuck, whoever owns an NSX these days should just sit on it. It's a growing investment if maintained well and kept unmodified. I remember when people where like "pfff... 70k for an 8 year old car? Ya right!"
