The AWD Thread

Chicago had a pretty big snow storm on Friday. No streets were plowed, stopped traffic all over the place. Saw mostly Mustangs and Cadillac's stuck in snow either driving sideways or spinning at a standstill.

Let me tell you how pumped I was to have brand new tires + AWD + Snow Mode which all were able to get my lowered G around like it was just a couple flurries. I was so happy to pass by people who may have thought I was going to be that car. #1 reason why I bought this model.

How are you AWD owners handling your weather these days?

My wife drives B8 A4 Avant.

We never get snow in socal but we did take the car up to Big Bear MT once, and it handled the snow/icy road extremely well.

My new B8 S4 has Quattro, but the car came with summer/performance tires. Still did ok in the snow. My 06 RL also always did well in the snow, a lot of it also depends on the driver and their driving skills.

Not driving like a dumbass in snow is the most important thing to remember.

Me, too. RWD + winter tires=winter success.

I will acknowledge, though: AWD + winter tires=unstoppable. Of couse, most people with AWD don't do winter tires even though the benefit is clear in stopping distance.

+1, got caught Friday midnight driving in some slippery snow in the Baltimore/DC area. I drive very conservatively in those conditions.

When you know your car can handle it and it's not involving other vehicles, nothing wrong with a little fun.

I do it just to annoy the AWD folk who get all happy 1 day out of the year that their cars were worth it.

Just kidding, no needs to start a rwd vs awd war.

I have completely bald federal all season tires on my car, by bald i mean the steel is coming out and I'm scared to go past 80 cuz it could possibly blow out.

I still LOL as I plow through the snow and the Eclipse next to me sits there and spins tires for 30seconds before it moves.

So I'm doing great, in process of purchasing new tires which will make snow seem like it's not there.

LOL

Funny, the reason I purchased an AWD was due to the horrible snow we had last year. It seemed to be snowing at least once a week at some points.

With my luck, this year we have had ONE fukin snow event.

Let me enjoy it

my 2001 forester rides on yokohama geolander ats tire all year long and performs impeccably well. i'm an avid rock climber and often take road trips from fl to the mountains, complete with snow, ice, rough terrain, etc. hell, the lil subie crushes mud, dirt, sand, etc as well!

I'm in the same boat as you with the exception of having an '07 G35x sedan. I run Pilot Alpin PA3 tires on my OE wheels during the winter and with Friday's snow storm here in Chicago, I can honestly say that aside from freaking out a few times because people either came close to rear ending me or plowing into the side of me, I had fun. In those anxiety-ridden instances, the snow mode 50/50 along with the Pilot Alpin's just allowed me to get out the way FAST..lol

No problems at all here with winter tires on. The stock all-seasons had some trouble with traction - slid and hit the curb at a low speed when I tried taking a slightly sharp turn at ~25 km/h - but I never got stuck.

Now it's raining.

Which tires does the A4 come with?

Spent most of the snowstorm here sideways in a Mustang GT.

Responsibly of course. Did a few hours on the highway, handled it perfectly fine. Only problem was that you couldn't see the lane markings, and we hit the shoulder a few times. Eventually gave up and aimed for smack in the middle of the road, lanes be damned.

Found an empty parking lot at around 10PM, which made for some great fun.

Agreed, let me just add + Manual Trans to your equation....there is almost no need for brakes!

I was missing my Legacy saturday when it snowed, the awd and nokian all weather tires where quite fun. I put some Nokians on the TL and can not complain at all, car drives great. I purposely drive into unshoveled spots just to plow out of them.

I do get a kick out of watching the 2wd trucks and cars with summer tires zig zagging their way up slight hills.

SH-AWD + conti dws it might as well have been August for me this past Saturday in NY. I know SH-AWD is more performances based than foul weather but I sure as hell couldn't tell. The only time I lost traction was when I gunned it from a standstill on some snow/slush, attempting an AWD burnout.

It comes with the sport package. The tires look pretty meaty.

My XC90 has been pretty good with the snow here. only some slippage, but the DSTC (Dynamic Stability & Traction Control) keeps the ride fairly level.

I'm riding on Pirelli Scorpion Zero's (255/60-19), 107Y. I'll get a true winter set once I move into my house, but these tires are not too bad in a light snow.

My Forester has performed beautifully. No need for winter tires since I don't drive like a retard in the snow.
