Audi vs. BMW

A buddy of mine wants to get a new car and he is looking for something smorty, fast, unique per say, something that's gonan stand out. his budget is $80 000.

First we went to Audi to look at the new 2012 s5. They don't have them in stock untill august but he priced one out and it came out fully loaded, white with red interior to $77,800. There was a sortm outside so we didn't test drive it but we are going today to do that.

Then that same say we went to BMW to check out the M3. base price is $83 000 and fully loaded one was $99 000. So he said, that's well over my budget, lets see the 335. fully loaded 335 came out to $78 900.

Now he isn't sure what he want's to get. 335 or the s5.

I know that 335 can be chipped and tuned and all that and he likes that. but he doesn't like the styling of the BMW as much as he likes the Audi and EVERYONE has a 335 in their garage. At least around here. Like they had a huge giveaway at the BMW dealership.

I think he is set on the audi as I would be as well, but I'd like to hear your guys' opinion on this.

Should he sacrifice extra HP and tunability of the BMW for the uniqueness of the S5?

What did your friend say about this question?

He can't go wrong with either car for sure. He just needs to set his priorities straight and pick one.

I would go for the S5 but I'm an Audi whore.

Given how much the car rags love the 1M for the price, I would definitely look at that too. I have no idea what things cost in Canada due to your insane taxes.

I don't think you can go wrong with a 1M, M3, S5, or CTS-V. Has he looked at the Cayman S? In the States, that car is in the ballpark of the S5/M3.

It's amazing how "few" sports cars fall into the $60-70k price range.

How about the 335is?

I still would take the s4 over the s5.

^ Agreed.

If your friend doesn't need to have a coupe, I would definitely take a S4 over S5.

Does your friend need AWD in Deadmonton? S5 is more unique and IMO more beautiful but test drive it first. It's a front heavy pig that drives like a boat on city streets. I drove the one with the magma red interior, it was plush.

Cayman S will be out of his pricepoint in Canada.

1M would be my vote if your boy wants a driver-oriented car. Like I said though, you gotta let us know if he needs AWD.

You make a valid point: How many really do fall into that range?

A plain 911 might be there, or maybe a Lexus IS-F. Or there's the new Audi A7, which is the best interpretation of a 4 door hatch. Hell, maybe a C63 AMG might fit the bill. So my candidates:

Audi A7
MB C63 AMG
Caddy CTS-V

I think those are going to be more than $80K CAD.

yea 335is is what he priced out I think. Came out more than the s5.

he loves the coupe so that's what he wants to go with. I am still gonna suggest to him the CTS-V sedan and coupe.
I don't know if he is gonan drive this car in the winter or not, but I don't think he's picking an audi strictly because of the AWD system. Winters are horrible in Edmonton and I can't see him ruining a S5 in the winter here.

And if it was me picking, I would go for the S4, I love performance sedans. Maybe even a wagon. But this is his decision in the end, I am just there to throw suggestions. We'll see after a test drive today if he likes the S5 or not.

yea those are OVER the 80k limit he set for himself. he started off at 70K and after seeing he can't get much (not what he would like) he upped it to 80k

Consider the C63 AMG Coupe, something new for 2012. I read that the base price would be 63K$CAD.

But if he wants THE best, the M3 still rules.

At this level of price, importing a car from USA through a broker makes sense and he could save like 10K$. Some brand can't be imported as new but as "slightly used".

That's an intriguing price for what will be a beast of a car. The preview I read of the C63 was impressive, especially going with the 2 doors.

335is is his best bet. Its gunna be a little more than the 335i and a little faster. He will meet his budget and get the best of his money. Also, they have some minor exterior changes, but enough to be distinguished (by people that know about cars somewhat).

M3>>S5>>335i

If it is between 335i and S5 then, I will take S5 over 335i.

Yep, they are all on the side of the roads and no one buys them. I bet they dont even make it out of the factory without failing, thats why theres such a long wait for them to make it to dealers.

C63 coupe irks me, it just doesnt look right to me. Maybe girly looking? I dunno. My opinion of course.

Im guessing your buddy isnt huge on the performance aspect of these cars but more wants something for the looks? Im sure he will buy the S5 if thats the case. Its a very stylish car. Not that its a slouch in the performance area...

Have you considered importing a car from the US? Considering the loonie is worth a little more than the dollar, you might be open to some more options.

Don't know how much it will cost to actually import it, but I think it's definetely something to look into and do some number-crunching.

And how many have you owned? I would be willing to bet, and I know a few of them myself, that there are many members of this board that unfortunately feel the same way about Acura and Honda after having multiple transmission replacements on their TL, CL, Accord, or Odyssey. And that's just that part, there are MANY other components that have been less than reliable on Acura and Honda's.

EVERY brand has their share issues. Sometimes it takes a while for them to work through them, Audi had to go through it in the 90's and in the early 2000's they started to really improve. In the end they worked through them otherwise they wouldn't still be around and people wouldn't be buying so many of their cars.

To me, it looks like an Accord Coupe (nice looking) but with the C front end. Do you see that? The side profile is what I see.

Forgot about the Dollar. My suggestions, as in "lightly used from the US" is what I should have said.

Also, a Volvo S60 stands out. AWD and 300 HP. I bet IPD already has a way to bump it up. Just a thought.

For a minute there I was about the very high prices you're posting, then I realized, it's in your currency and not USD...

Anyway, I would prefer BMW over Audi....don't forget, service is also included..

Personally, I see BMW's everywhere. Now, a nice S4 or S5 (especially the A5/S5) will get my head turning.

For that reason I would personally choose Audi over BMW 9 times out of 10. As a bonus, we have had the 2.0T A4 and the A6 and both were great cars. Dealership experience was top notch as well. So that would likely push me to 10 out of 10 times choosing Audi...

You know what kills me about Audi lately? It's that recently, Audi just thinks that their shit doesn't stink....Granted they make a good car. I just don't think they make a better car than BMW or MB. Just makes no sense to me....The A5/S5 is certainly a sexy car. Comparing an S5 to an M3, the M3 walks all over it. The S5 doesn't have the performance that you would expect from it. I've delivered a few of them and walked away impressed, but the power just isn't as good as you would expect it to be. It does have a decent sound coming out of the exhaust at least

starting price on that beauty is $85k. Well that's the one we have seen at the dealership priced at. Ridiculous if you ask me.

No he doesn't wanna look at the Volvo at all, I even sugested a CTS-V coupe or a sedan and he wasn't too thrilled about it. Plus I think they are over his budget as well.

BMW service is included but we talked to the manager yesterday and he agreed to match the service of the BMW, 4 years or 80 000km. All service and maintenance. Even offered to throw in one of the Stasis Engineering options for free, chip, exhaust... which ever one he wants. They are a dealer for Stasis.

exactly what I am thinking, 335 are everywhere. Everyone and their dog has one. Also if you are gonna pay 80k for a car, I would want the interior to NOT look like it's from the 90s.

We have test driven both, 335, and yesterday the S5. I was sitting in the back on both test drives and I have to say that for sportiness, 335 is on the top. but I didn't feel there was that much luxury for a sport luxury car. s5 was just as quick from what I can tell. But it did that with style, smooth and not too much road noise. Seats were comfortable even in the back (I am 5'11" and a sales person sitting in the front was my heaight).

In my opinion, between the two, I would go with the S5. It sucks that 2013, NOT the 2012 coupes are gonna be 3.0T like the cabrio is now. I would want a coupe with a 3.0T but that would be another year of waiting. he is still deciding so we'll see what happens.

Indeed, the C-coupe's does resemble the current generation Accord coupe.

Back on topic, the S5 (and A5) -- to me -- are sharper looking than the E92 (M3 and 335i) but I'd still opt for the E92.

RS = AMG and M performance

but...

S = AMG and M pricing

IMO, i would still rather have an S5 or S4 over an M3 or AMG b/c it is more unique. Also, the C63 coupe doesnt give off the appearance of a 60+ car.

Oh, and S4 >> S5 all day.

I know exactly what you mean. But when you look at prices, fully loaded m3 comes out to 99k where a s5 comes to 78 out the door. both fully loaded white on red interior. That's 20k difference in price.

Also when I sat in the new A5, I wanted it right away. When I sat in the new 335, I thougth to myself "I have seen this interior before, Oh yea, it was back in 99, 320 had the exact same one".

I think that BMW is more performance refined where the Audi is more luxury and "pretty" refined with some performance to back it up.

I don't know about the pricing tho, S comes cheaper fully loaded than M or AMG base prices.

Oh and yea, s4 is the way to go. I was looking at the used car lot and they had Imola Yellow 05 S4 and I want it so bad. People usually don't like the yellow but I think it's unique and have only seen one other like it in the city. it might have been this one that someone traded in.
