Delaware family sets trap to nab teen joyriders
NEW CASTLE, Del. — Two teens are in custody after a family set a trap to catch whoever was repeatedly taking their SUV in the middle of the night, driving it around and filling the tank up before returning it. The teens were arrested Sunday and charged with felony theft.

Several months ago, city police said the Acura MDX owner repeatedly smelled gas and tobacco in his car. He often noticed the gas gauge fluctuating dramatically.

So he put a motion sensor and alarm in the car. When the vehicle was driven away, the alarm went off and he called police.

Police said the teens found a spare set of keys inside the unlocked SUV several months ago and returned with the keys to take the car out for joyrides.
so that must be how my tank magically filled up.....

That's how I got caught with taking my mother's car one night. I stopped to put gas in it, the butthead I was driving with filled up the tank when I told him to only put it to a half tank when I went to the bathroom. I didn't pay attention to it when a parked it for the night. busted!!!

It was a nice gesture, I'll give them that. I bet that guy wouldn't be complaining if gas over $4 like last year.

Hahaha what punks! The stupid things kids do... I could see taking a friends parents car out for a joyride, but a total stranger. Lucky they didn't get shot when trying to return it.

lol, at least they weren't dicks and vandalized the car. I remember a story where someone took the spare off of the back of a Jeep, then a week later put it back on with a "Sorry, I needed it" note

that's what i was thinking. They freakin left it UNLOCKED with the spare key inside.

At least get one of those hidden key boxes and lock the damn thing. Still not what I'd do, but probably much smarter than leaving the car UNLOCKED with the spare inside.

I used to do that as a kid with my dad car. Roll it out of the drive way drive it all night stop by the gas station and fill er up to the level it was at. It was a bitch when you realize you just put more fuel in than was in there before and had to try to get it down. That or hope dad didnt notice. Im pretty sure he knew looking back but i think he never said any thing because i replaced the gas i used.
