Anyone have experiance with Range Rovers???

im in the market for a used luxury vehicle in the 10-15k market, ive been toying with the idea of an SUV. Ive been thinking about the infiniti qx4, 2000+ jeep grand cherokee, etc.

i noticed there alot of clean 98+ range rover 4.0 v8s on the market for good prices. i was always under the impression land rovers had bad maitenance, but a quick check of MSN autos show that the 2000 years have little to no problems with transmissions, engines, etc. can anyone verify this, any one have experiance with range rovers?

http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Re...=Range%20Rover

any advice on purchasing an older luxury suv or car would be helpful. the car i want the most is a 98+ Lexus Ls400, however i like the idea of an SUV because i had a problem with lead footing my sedans and coupes, and now i like slower cruising driving, and the SUV fits that kind of driving style. Plus, with its terrible MPG, i will keep off the accelerator more.

A few of these same threads have come up this year.

I will say once a Range Rover breaks, you WILL pay to fix it.

If you buy a used Range Rover it will be the biggest mistake of your life. They are full of problems.

Full of problems--lots of them. In fact, my friend has her Disco II in the shop right now. Another one of my friends affectionately refers to her parents' as "the lemon".

Yes, they depreciate immensely; yes, they're extremely cool looking; yes, they're very luxurious; and yes, they have incredible personality. Just don't be tempted. They are still electrical nightmares.

I believe Defenders are the only reliable LRs--and you'll pay a premium for them.

They are as poorly made as they are well engineered. Don't do it.

coming from an owner of a disco 2 either but CPO under warrenty or get an aftermarket one, they are also hit and miss. when i looked into getting mine the people i talked to either said the were a nightmare or they had no problems. many of the problems are easy fixes however, try rangerover.net or landroverworld.org right now i actually have a slight leak in my radiator and my rear hub is leaking but that is all covered since i bought CPO from main line land rover. these cars tend to have their share of leaks as well as the air suspension is a costly problem. if you want any info feel free to pm me or email me at tua59450@temple.edu

haah jesus that sounds bad. im usually pretty trustworthy of MSN autos reliability ratings because they have been accurate in many of the japanese cars i have owned.

i geuss alot of european luxury cars have electrical problems.

its probably better to stay safe and stay with japanese like Lexus or Infiniti?

If you are looking at used vehicles, yes.
For new Euro vehicles, you'll get a loaner while the dealership tries to figure out a problem under warranty. Then dump the Euro car before the warranty expires.

You might want to take a look at Consumer Reports to see what its surveys say about vehicles you're interested in, but I would bet that Range Rovers have all black circles (i.e. bad/horrible) for every year and model. I have yet to hear of tremendous improvement in its reliability.

you need to get on consumerreports.com and read their take on LR--they have the lowest (I believe) customer satisfaction/reliability ratings possible, or very near the bottom. I'd run away screaming from that mfr.

400+ problems per 100 vehicles made.

For comparison, Lexus and Buick are around 103.

I would stay away from it. I had a DiscoII and that thing stayed in the shop plus the gas mileage is TERRIBLE. Also, make sure if you find one check the suspension, if the air ride goes out then we are really talking big bucks.

I think Skillmatic has one.... he posted pics of his with some 20's. I'm not really into SUVs anymore but I like the way they look, but usually Land Rovers/Range Rovers finish at the BOTTOM of the reliability lists.

owned an 03 QX4 for 1.5 yrs. thing was a beast, went through very high snow, pretty comfy, deffinlty more truck then crossover. plenty of room in it. good power. front and rear heated seats. only issue is gas mileage, the VQ could drink like a mofo. anything else u wanna know about it just ask. overall i thought it was a great truck, wish in some ways i still had it as a second car but i can not afford a second car and the thing was killing me on gas bc of my long commute.

Since you mentioned it, I'll say Jeep FTW. I've known about a dozen people that have owned them, from year-models in the 80's to a 2004 we just sold a few months ago, and they've all been rocks. They're made to handle rough terrain & even the older models still look pretty good. Since there are a ton of them, they're relatively cheap & parts/mods are cheap as well, and the Jeep community is fantastic - lots of great people.

range rover was ranked dead last in reliabiliy recently..with their score being -188% ..meaning they have more then twice the amount of problems then the mean...if you like seeing your car in the shop..get it.

yeah, we sold that one ('04 GC SE), but we were (until a couple days ago) looking for an older, high-mileage Jeep Cherokee to take camping & to haul our mountain bikes. They're really high in reliability ('87-current) and can be found for really low prices. We decided that it would be better for us in particular to just have a hitch fabbed onto my IS for $500 rather than risk the Jeep cratering & having to insure it, put gas in it, .

Off to change my text!

yea my friends aunt had a qx4 that we would steal once and a while and take around the city. that thing went through gas like no other. definately under 15mpg.

its safe to say range rover has been crossed off my list. im probably going to stick with something in the lexus category now. although, i still have my eye on 2000-04 jeep grand cherokees if the price is right.

Jeep $ >>> Lexus $

if you're looking to get nav as well, the Jeep nav sux for those years, fwiw. however, I don't see an RX w/ nave being in your price range unless it's worn out or elderly.

i do like the Lexus GX and LX series SUVs, but they are out of my price range and i hear their fuel economy is in the pits. I have seen some 2002+ Tahoes and Yukons in the 10-15k price range, although some are higher mileage. I have always liked these SUVs, i test drove one a while back and loved it. I see a million of them on the road so im assuming its a pretty solid truck??

im leaning more and more towards a sedan now, LS400 and Infiniti I35 are some top contenders.
