anyone ever sell a car to carmax?
Hey guys, I'm trying to get rid of a 98 accord with 300k on it. I bought a CL-S to replace it. I know carmax will buy your car whether you buy one from them or not, just wondering if anyone has done it and if it was a hassle or not. Tried to craigslist it but the mileage scares everyone away i beleive.
I almost did when I wanted to buy my TL, but the dealership actually offered me a bit more for the trade-in car, so I went with the dealership. I went through the whole process, though. Pretty hassle free. They give you a price, and you either take it or leave it. You have 7 days to decide.
The lowballed the 'rents when they tried to sell their SUV a couple of years ago. They offered $16K I think.
They ended up privately selling it for $24,500. Even KBB suggested it to be about $23K if I remember correctly.

Anything too old to sell on their lot or something that won't sell they will low ball you.
I've sold 2 cars & got good money for them. Not as much as a private sale, but better then trade in.
You have an old car with a ton of miles. See what they will give you.
Also clean & wax the car very well before they look at it. The appearance will net you slightly higher.

When I bought my '04 TL (not from Carmax - I bought it new from an Acura dealer), I sold my '97 Maxima with around 120-130k on it to Carmax. It was painless. They gave me way more than any dealer would give and gave me over KBB value. I'm definitely going back to them when I get rid of my TL... but it's only got 106,000 on it, so it may be a year or two at least.

i've heard stories of both sides, ppl getting market value and of course ppl getting lowballed. if u do accept what they will give u it's really hassle free and u'll walk out with a check like everyone has been saying. plan on being there for a few hours though to have the car inspected, then u have to see the offer from the rep that's working with u, then u have to wait to have a check cut.
OP; let us know what they offer. I got a 96 TL with 234K on it and going to get rid of it in a few months....I want to know what it's worth...it would be interesting to know what they offer you with those kind of miles.
My parents and I have both sold cars to them...got decent prices...not as much as private party, but more than a trade/dealer. It only took me about an hour to get my check from them.
Went into Carmax this past Saturday to see what they would give me. I have an 03 TL-S with 82K, navi, spoiler, and chrome Type S rims. The offer came back at $6500! I couldn't believe it. They had another 03 TL Type-S, non navi, with slightly less miles that had just been sold for almost 17K!
