Anybody With Knowledge Of Street Bikes
Went and looked at a Katana 750 the other day, its a 99 in good shape with 10k on it, gonna get a really good deal $ wise, but i am wondering if any of you can tell me what this means;started it and not realizing it is not fuel injected i didnt fuck with the choke at first, and then when the guy adjusted the choke and started it it ran real rough so he started taching it up, and then it ran beautifully... could this mean it needs a tune up, or something bigger wrong with it? thanks for any help, need to know asap.

I had a 90 GL it had 6 carbs on it(yes that's right and it's not a type)it had manual choke. so as long as it ran well after it warmed up.
my new 05 Goldwing has auto. choke. so as soon as it fires and about 2-3 seconds after that it stays on and after it runs fine. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

look for katan 600's for a first bike not a 750. and for your question the bike was just cold and needed to warm up. my dads FJ1200 does that because it has the manual choke( which for the first time today i rode around the block on it since he was teaching me how to ride, alot of bike for sure and i'm looking for a katana 600) now my dads new M109R boulevard is all fuel injected and is a bit rough when cold but smooths right out after it's warm. before i get flamed about riding his FJ he has alot of riding experiance and me riding it was just to teach me, but he knows it's to much for a first bike.

Katana's run like that when they're warm too. Spare yourself the embarrassment of having to tell your grandkids you once owned a Katana. On the bright side, it's discontinued for 07. There is a god.

He likes it alot. he actually just picked it up last weekend because of how hard they are to get. it does have alot of power with alot of get up. first day he got it, he dropped to 4th gear on the highway and opened it up and was at 110 in no time, he was surprised by how fast it got going. the bike is very sleek looking though and has that big rear tire. i'll upload some pics if i can get the digi working today.

Looks like everyone already answered the technical question... but as for the logical question, since this is your first bike, don't get it.
Not only is there a possibility that it's not running right, but that's too much bike for a first bike. Take the MSF course, then get a Ninja 250/500 or Suzuki gs500f like Jatt mentioned. Not only are they safer first bikes, but since they're so popular as beginner bikes they hold their value well. After a year or two you'll be able to sell it for close to what you paid. Then you can upgrade to a bigger bike...

Does anyone read this
The Katuna!!! is a piece of junk if you ask me. How cold was it when you first started it? It could be the cold or it could be clogged jets.
It is an old bike. If he let it sit for a while with fuel in the tank with out fuel saver in it……it could have clogged up the jets.

Take the MSF course and just buy the damn thing. I've been riding street for 20 years this summer. My two cents is that you will outgrow a 250/500 in a matter of weeks to months then you will be looking for something larger.
A 750 is a nice size, just don't go out and buy a new liter bike, etc.
Get a good deal on the Katana, get some miles under you belt and love every minute of it! Ride safe!

Dude...A number of reasons not to get a Katana. 1. It's a heavy ass tank, regardless if it's a 600-750. It was designed in the eighties, handles like it was designed in the 70's. 2. Long, heavy, and underpowered make for a dangerous combination. 3. If you buy it you'll regret it...IMO I'd go with an older R6 or CBR600F4, there lighter, better handling, and faster. These bikes are much more noob friendly, and your less likely to want a new bike next year. Take it easy for awhile and in a couple of years you'll be trading for a 750 or 1000.

I wasn't suggesting he do that, only that most new riders want to. Just trying to keep a new rider from buying a relic and thinking this is as good as it gets. If I were buying a new bike, I'd get an current gen 600. They are extremely fast, and light, and an absolute blast to ride. A 3-4 year old F4I for a newb is the way to fly IMO. Read some articles on countersteering before you do anything.

I second that. It's an old bike and carburetted. Those things are cold blooded and expensive if the carbs needs to be cleaned & synched.
