Affordable and interesting $/hp cars

THe C5 Z06 is also in a similar category, though it has higher HP, it is also very very common and is a well-known car. I was originally thinking of lesser-known cars/gems.
But certainly I think we can add an honorable mention list to include cars like the S2000, Miatas, etc.
We're going to be talking about Miatas here right away, if we keep going down the power list, because of car weight. We're just looking for high power/low cost cars. Not how fast they actually are.
Though, if anything, maybe that in itself is worthy of a thread- having lists of cars, organized by, I don't know, 0-60 times, and organized in categories, such as 5.0-5.2s, 4.8-5.0s, etc...? I'm sure we can come up with a very cool list and if anyone ever asks what to replace their ____ with, we point them to one of these two threads.

As I mentioend above I am ALL for awesome cars like the S2000 and Miatas and SRT-4s....which are not big power but great cars in their own right. Hence I added the Honorable Mention....which can include more expensive cars, less HP cars, and also newer cars that may not be truly in the sports car category (ie the RLX, etc.) but to some feel like is a great value for the dollar.
And yes I did mention that if someone or if I have time we can also organize this list by market price, and value ($/hp), and speed/acceleration.
Agreed... and after my last reply I started thinking this as well. When I see this topic I think more 2006 Pontiac GTO versus S2000.
While I love the S2000... it's definitely not a high HP, low dollar car. I think we started losing our way when the RLX was added. It may be a fast car, but that's not what this topic was about. Older AMGs, Typhoons/Cyclones, Lightnings, GTOs, STS-V, etc... that's what should be on the list.
Of course, this list is subjective and everyone will have their own opinion about affordable + interesting and what kind of HP they want...

But with great great cars like the S2000, even if it's not fitting original criteria I think we can add that to a supplementary, Honorable Mention List, as a great car that may not be super high HP and certainly not as high of a hp/$ ratio as the others.
At work now so will update the list when I am off work and also add the honorable mention category as well.
When I got more time later today I might go through the list and calculate out all the $$/hp ratios to see what is the average we're working with in these cars so we can get a good idea of the level of value.

Honourable mention is way too broad of a category to use in this thread. A 240hp s2000 is neither cheap, nor high powered.
you're diluting your own thread.

Nor can you get an adequate $/hp number for any car, as they range hugely in price, based on condition and mileage and options. A CTSV2 can go from 30k to 50k. How do you get a number for that?

Definitely ANY of these cars can either be VERY expensive or VERY cheap depending on the specific condition/history/special editions of that car. So that is always there for any cars. A Malboro edition Syclone in mint collector-edition would fetch probably way more than 30k, etc.
The V2s are going to be quite variable but for our purpose only the higher mileage/older model year V2s would qualify. Otherwise, most of the cars in general have an average market price that is meeting criteria (say below 30k). So we could just use a standard reference and a reasonable condition/option/mileage for that year to come up with a measuring stick.
Having a specific $$/hp may be a bit too specific and too car dependent.....so could leave that out and simply have an average expected price.

I think I'll go get everybody in the other form to come over and talk about how marvelous their RLX Sport Hybrids are.

Uh.... S2ks can be had for under 8-12k if you're looking for a higher mileage example.
8-12k for a car that does mid 5 seconds to 60 and low 14.0s is pretty good value for money / performance, IMO. There are cars in that list of similar performance , just with more power & more weight.

$13k for a 78k mile Z06
A base C5 would definitely be in that range.
I own a S2000 and don't think it's a bang for your buck.

I agree with you in comparison to the C5 Z06, no competition there. I was more referring to the few items on the list that are somewhat comparable and in some cases even slower than the S2000.
(FYI, I hope I'm not sounding like a total S2000 fanboi. Perhaps I'm seeing the thread as high performance cars for the $, not high hp cars for the $)

I think this thread is losing focus because it started with an unclear premise.
But let's take it back to what inspired it, which is the STS-V. Honestly I had no idea that car existed either, and it is a very intriguing buy to me now. I've been looking at 1st Gen CTS-V for a long time now, but the exterior and interior just couldn't push me over the edge. The STS-V on the other hand, I am going to have to look into.
But anyway the list got bogged down because we were also looking at horsepower for the dollar. If that's the case, C5 Z06, 996 911 Turbo, and any of the '55 AMG series will be top of those lists. But you better hurry on the 996 Turbos because they are coming back in value...
Instead, I think the point of this list should be to focus on the overlooked cars. So obvious cars shouldn't be mentioned (BMW M5, etc). For those cars, they'd be more appropriate for a thread about desirable cars that have depreciated into bargains.
So here's my contribution in addition to the aforementioned STS-V: 2003 - 2006 Jaguar S-Type R - Below $15,000 with a supercharged Ford derived 4.2 V8.

If my mod powers allowed it, I would make you OP!
I would a billion percent prefer an STS-V over a V1.

also, sure, you can buy an s2000 for 12k... But I'm willing to bet most people on here do not want a 12k s2000. I can find a crashed maserati for dirt cheap. Does that count? I mean, I can rebuild it...

Though if we want to make it more encompassing, the limit can be lowered. 375hp? 360hp? 350hp?
If the limit is lowered, then by all means we can include the RLX-SH. The price point though... That's where it may get difficult.

There should really be a separate list for fast cars, regardless of how many HPs they have. I'm just too lazy to make one
