Acura reliability

I have always been under the impression that Acura is great in reliability. There have been so many stories about the Gen 2s w/ problems and people have tons of stories about brakes and transmissions. I have never heard of stuff like this for Lexus. Is there any reason we should be wary of Acura reliability going downhill? Is there anythign of concern that should be loked at for the 04 TL imparticular? Is this a clear cut case of don't buy 1st model year? I think BMW, Mercedes, and mostly VW quality is going down the drain. Increased maintnance costs and decreased reliability. It would pain me to see Acura added to this list. What are your thoughts on the matter?

latest CR suvery still shows Acura as #1 in quality, and the tranny issue on the last-gen TL was blown out of porpotion...in the end, only 0.1% of cars were affected. And over the summer, Honda's VP promised "quality over quantity" ...there's really nothing to worry about IMO

Hey, Mo, you joking?

You've been right with us on this site for all these months, and, sure, we've seen these complaints, but don't you think that MOST of what we've seen bears out Acura reliability?

No good, you'll hafta do better than that!

Actually of course it's a reasonable question, but I do think that the overall of what we've heard on here is very positive about Acura reliability.

What brought it up is that Mercedes used to be a powerhouse, and I had a discussion w/ my dad how he wont buy anymore as reliability sux now and repairs are over inflated. Tried to charge use $60 for putting air in tires. We ahve an 84 SL w/ no problems, super reliable. the newer ones, we have a 00 CLK cabrio where the top stopped working, was just a switch that was faulty, $1500 for that, a 2001 S500 and the masterarm went. How does that happen on a new car, jsut rediculous. By bye Mercedes, prestige name is no loinger earned or worth it. Next will LS400 mebbe, TL for me. Just wanted to make sure Ac is not going in the same direction, I don't think it is, but many wont admit Mercedes is shotty too. Tons of frieds w/ BMWs including new M3, always going in to the shop (all personal experiences I base these assumptions off of). My friend has a VW, shittiest thing I ever saw. 2700 miles went for oil change, there was no oil left. I got a kick outta this site cause it is so true, check it out. myvwlemon.com

FWIW, bought the first '99 3.2TL available. Acura redesigned the model, moved production from Japan to Marysville, lowered the base price $5,200.

Risky move, huh?

Not one problem in 68,000 miles. Not one.

I had my 2002 TL-P for 33k hard-driven miles. The only problems were:

1. Moonroof squeak, fixed in 5 minutes at the dealer with new sealer tape
2. Center console latch, another 5 minute repair with an updated model
3. Mildly warped rotors at 31k, not bad but since there was a TSB I had the rotors resurfaced at Acura's cost.

Really, nothing major. I'm unconcerned with Acura's reliability, and I'm happy with my dealer's ability to handle problems.

I owned a '99 TL and although I didn't own the car for very long (2 years) I had no major problems.

The windshield had a stress crack at the time of delivery and was replaced and the sunroof was squeeky. No problems otherwise. I really liked that car, but found it to be a little too "sedate" and wanted something a little sportier.

3 years later, I'm once again looking at a TL. That has to say something.

Thumbs up

I have a 2002 TL-S with 31,000 miles and have found the car very reliable. I have had only minor problems and my dealer fixed everything quickly and at no cost. (Yes my Roters also had to be resurfaced and they did that at no charge. I think that you have to be lucky with what ever acr that you buy. My son had a 2001 Lexus ES300 and never had any problems at all. Now he had a Lexus GX470 and there is a problem that Lexus just cannot fix. The car has a minor vibrationj at 1700 to 2400 RPM's that is either in the Tranny or somewhere in the drivetrain. About half of the GX470's have this problem and Lexus just cannot fix it, (in a $50K car!) So much for for all overpriced cars. I love my TL-S and plan to stick with Acura, style, price and Quality!
