i'm getting rid of my 1.7EL and trading up to a TSX
some of the info is wrong
its not a 1.8L its a 1.6 hence the 1.6 EL

The 97 to 00 EL while a Civic at least looked quite different from a Civic. The 01 to 03 went the other way to the point I had trouble distinguishing it from a Civic. The 04 had again widened that gap (Civic changed as well though) so at least now I know its an EL. But with the release of the Civic Si Sedan last year I really don't see the need for an EL unless you really want leather and those few extra feautures. Now if they threw the 2.0L 160HP motor in there, its a different ballgame.

After the 2000 model year, I'm not sure you could get a Civic with the 127HP VTEC engine....you could only get it with the base model 115 whatever HP non VTEC.
There are a few other differences, such as standard 4 wheel discs, and little stuff like how there's no key hole in the trunk (Civics have this because you can get a Civic without remote keyless), and I think they're a bit more sound damped, and you can get leather if you want. Some of the interior details are just different enough to make the EL just a tiny bit more "luxurious".
That said, you can get most of those differences in the new Civic Si Sedan (ie. they were available in the Si, but that was a coupe).
The EL's a good starter car, but I'm chomping at the bit to get a TSX!
