Accident.. sort of

Hey guys,

I was driving down from SF to LA on 101S under heavy rain last night. All of a sudden, a car in front must have stepped on something.. and it hit my front windshield and totally cracked the whole thing.

I'm going to contact my insurance (Allstate) in 1 hour, and I need some feedbacks from you all.

I don't really remember where and when it happened since I was in total shock. Should I just randomly pick some exit and time just to claim the report? What should I do? Do you guys think I'm going to be responsible in paying the deductible for this type of accident? I mean it should be around 400 to replace the windshield, so it's not much, but it'd be great, if I don't have to pay for it.

Thanks, guys.

Dont report it to insurance. Aren't windshields something like 200 bucks to replace? That would be less than the deductible.

If you don't remember the exit number or time, just say so.

Check if you have windshield coverage. It should be like $100 deductible. You should definitely claim this if it is only your windshield since this will not have any impact to your future premium.

Yes, I should check if I have windshield coverage. If I do, I should definitely go that way then.

Thanks guys.

i had a similar thing happen to me w/ a big truck from a quarry.

insurance didn't have a special windshield deductible. They said if I have been a member for like over 5 years w/o a claim they could waive the deductible. I'd consider calling your insurance and just asking, but don't ask to file a claim until you know what it'll cost

I think some states have requirements that all insurance companies must cover the windshield without a deductible, but I don't think that's the case in California.

I just paid out of pocket and cost a little over $300 for my windshield, since I didn't qualify for the waive, and my deductible is $500

This is a comp claim. Pretty simple and it will not increase your premium so feel free to call it in to your insurance. Just make sure the repair is more than your deductible.

Oh, and chances are he has glass insurance on his auto policy, and it's separate than the collision deductible. It shouldn't cost him anything. To the OP, do you have glass insurance? If so, call your insurance company and make the claim. It shouldn't cost you anything.
