A4 1.8T Opinions wanted

I'm thinking about ditching my 01 CLS and replacing it with a 01 A4 1.8T. I had a 00 A4 1.8T, but I traded it for an 02 Tahoe. I think it is the best car I've driven, not power wise but cruising wise. That thing would cruise awesome at about 110. You couldn't even tell you were going that fast.

My question to the forum is...
What type of mods are available for this car? Does it have the potential to produce 400-500WHP? I'm tired of the limited options that are available for the CLS and don't want to make the same mistake twice.

Thanks

Yes, on the HP question. 1.8Ts are known to produce enormous amounts of power on stock internals. Check out www.goapr.com for engine upgrades. They have kits from Stage I to IV. If you have the cash to blow, get it.

find out how much you are willing to blow though...you dont want to buy the car for $35k and then spend $10-15k in mods...you might as well get the s4

damn that should be tight you would be hauling some ass, also do you want 5speed or auto. This would be great for modding but audi's electronic reliability is shit

The '03 1.8T 5speed sport and the '03 CL-S 6speed were the 2 finalist the last time I went shopping for a new car. I loved the quality of the Audi and the ride. But I just couldn't see paying 34K for a 180hp car. I did spend some time looking at mods to get the Audi match up w/ the acura. The selection for the Adui is much better than the CL. I think that the chip would be the first thing I would get. It's suppose to add a fair amount of power for the money. Plus all of the ussual addons. As for 400 hp that might be a stretch.

I do agree with you on the fact that the selection is very limited on the CL. I'm running in to problems finding things to work on for mine. Best of luck on the A4 purchase.

I just sold my '00 A4 1.8T to buy a '03 CL-S. Im my opinion, the CL is a much better car all around. Although the 1.8T was nice with the quattro in the winter, I was just never very impressed with the performance. You have to mod those things to make them even close to fun... besides that, most of the A4's I've seen have either middle aged women or old men driving them!

my friend just bought a 1.8t a4. i love the car, and it doesn't feel 'slow' like everyone here makes it out to be...it's no dragster but it has some pep and handles very well. the interior is great...love the little red lights everywhere...and it just feels very solid and well built. my only issue with the a4 are the stock looks of the car...it begs for a body kit (like amir's) and that awkwardly protruding antenna on top of the car needs to go.

Go for the '02 if you can afford it....completely different car and it's leaps and bounds better than the '01 platform. A $500 chip will give you about 40 hp and even more tq. That shark fin is only on the '04s btw.

I say pony up a little more dough and get a used 2001 or 2002 B5 S4 (not sure if they made an 03 - thought the new one was an 04). This way you will have the same ride, practically, with more mod potential (500hp is definitely achieveable). You can mod an A4 significantly also but I just think the S4 is a beast!

I have a TLS and an A4 1.8T. They are apples and oranges.

If performance is your only concern then quite frankly you'd be better off in a WRX or EVO.

But the A4 does have a more upscale appearance and better finish than the WRX and EVO.

But at the end of the day, all the mods in the world will not eliminate turbo lag which I find a bit bothersome when in traffic (I drive a tiptronic).

Mod potential is big, check out audiworld.com and ask your question there.

I love the A4 1.8T. The price is right, the interior rocks, and you can mod the shit out of them. I think it's the best mid-priced European sedan out there right now.

Yea S4 are really nice and i wanted one... but they are sooooo hard to take care of those turbos that it wasnt even worth it for me.

But if you can find a low mileage S4 then do it. Just get it checked out carefully.
Another reason why i didnt want it cuz i think the B5 style is looking outdated.

Yes... that's the most obvious sign of a midlife crisis. I just hope I can afford a ferrari when I get up there!

Go with the S4... A4 is the cavalier of german engineering.

you do know the a4 and s4 share alot of their parts. Only real difference is the engine.

I know... I owned an A4 and promptly sold it. I have never been a fan of entry level cars from luxury automakers, but I got sucked into an A4 purchase by the low price. You get what you pay for. I much prefer my CL-S.

You are making no sense. You arent a fan of entry level cars from lux automarkers but you still went ahead and bought a A4?

You also say you get what you pay for.. but the A4 and CLS are basicly the same price.

To me the TLS and A4 feel completely different and i perfer the A4. But hey thats me and you are you. We all have different experiences.

I bought the A4 used and it was bargain priced... that's what I meant. I think you get alot more car buying an upper level Honda, which is all the CL-S is, rather then an entry level Audi. That's cool you like the A4... it just wasn't the car for me.

I've owned both and I prefer the ride of the Audi. Feels more solidly built and road noise is much less. It makes sense the Audi handles better since it is AWD. I'd never make the mistake of buying a FWD car again

CLS is more pimp looking than the A4 though

I think the A4 is one of the sharpest looking cars in its class. That said, I still wouldnt get one. Too expensive, questionable maintenance and reliability, and better cars (i.e.: TL) are available in the class.

I love the A4, both looks, interior, and AWD, but Audi needs to either bump the engine performance or get more realistic with the price.

They should be doing that end of this year . Suppose to be a 2.0t and a 3.2L engines, but those are just rumors for now.

Slow yes. But the car is sooo comfortable. I love my A4. Great car for cruising around town and long trips.

And how many sub $30k cars do you know with heated rear seats? (I know, that's a bad point, but I think it's pretty darn cool )
