Phee that is SOOO exagerated. I-85 is 70 mph from the GA/SC border to somewhere near Gwinnett, then again just past the airport on the south side. I drive that at 75 mph all the time with abosulutly no LEO issues.
Then as you get into ATL, it goes to 65, then 60, then 55.
And I-285, the Speed Limit might be 55 or 60, but it's like the Fkng Autobahn.

but once you get into the city, collectors starts to go down to about 105, and express about 110-120.16-lane highways FTW
When I drove to D.C. this past summer, speed limits went from 55 to 65 back down to 55. Highway cops didn't seem to give a crap, I went past one radar cop doing 85 and he didn't even blink.
fine by me.Some of you guys are nuts though, there were plenty of people blowing by at 90+ mph. Granted, there wasn't much traffic, but damn. You'd die within the first 1/4 mile doing that here.

I drive I90 towards Chicago everyday. Even though the speed is 55mph, cops don't seem to pull many people over for running 75-80mph. They are gunning for the people doing 90+ and driving wrecklessly(cutting people off, not using signals, etc.). Basically, unless you're the ONLY person on the road, you probably won't get pulled over for speeding.
With that being said, 55mph is still dumb. Cars are much safer/efficient than they used to be.

There are some areas around here where I think 55 on the freeway is appropriate. Once you move away from the congested areas it open up to 65 and 70.

One other thing I loved about NC was that most of the highways were 65mph, with 70mph limits further out from the city. Sure, there are some 55mph spots... but not many. Compare that with NY where it was 55mph almost everywhere on the interstates and you can see why I like it 
One thing I think that needs to be done is a more standard speed limit. It's very annoying driving from NC to NY, being on the same interstate for like 225 miles, and having the speed limit change 40 times ranging from 55mph to 75mph. Any interstate should be 65mph or up with a sign or something that says conditions pending. They need to eliminate so many speed changes on the same road. Of course that will never happen b/c it's revenue driven... but still... very annoying.

I'm very observant of the speed limit when not driving on major highways. However, I will drive as fast as I feel comfortable with when on Interstates, Turnpikes and Parkways......literally, that's just how I roll.

I gotta say, for as big as Chicago is, when there is moderate to heavy traffic, moving at speed, the drivers there are pretty considerate - turn signal use, giving room to move over, etc.

Here's what's fucked up. The speed limit on the beltway - aka suicide circle - is 55 but you'll be a hazard driving at that speed. Well unless it's rush hour, then you'll be doing 15 if you're lucky.
But head south on 95 where the speed limit is 65 and the majority of people putter along at 60. Maddening.
So if the limit is 55 everyone does 70+ but if it's 65 they mope along at 60.

I had to run out to Va Bch this afternoon for a service call. Along I64 its a 65 zone (for the most part), its two lanes, people do 60-65 in both lanes. Once you get into Va Bch the speed limit drops to 60, people still do 65. Then it drops to 55 and they hold it steady at 70. Its annoying.
On I95 near my house the speed limit is 60, and I am by no means in the city of Richmond. What doesnt make sense at all is two of the three highways that connect in this area are all 65 zones, so you have bottlenecking when people have to slow down (from 70-75 to about 65) as they merge onto I95.

Here in Colorado it seems like the highway is 75 until you get about 20 miles north or south of downtown Denver, where it drops to anywhere from 65 to 55. I-225, the highway I take to get to work has a speed limit of 65mph most of the way, but often the left lane is going 75 at the very least and usually in the 80's.

I read somewhere that the US Interstates were designed for comfortable traveling at 70 mph in 1950s cars. 60 years later, and you're going backwards?

I know some of those windy areas of the 101 do need slower speeds, but there are stretches were it's completely open.

Yeah, 20 over posted speed limit gets you a month suspension.

They do not mess around with speeding tickets here. Got pulled over a couple of times during the first year or two and luckily got out them... since then I do have one speeding ticket, but that's it. Now I typically drive anywhere from 5-9mph over on interstates and that's it simply b/c they do not play down here and it's not worth it...

We never take I95. Mainly b/c Charlotte is more inland and it's not really convenient for us... but also b/c there is sooo much more traffic on 95. Our main route out of NC is I77, then we take I81 pretty much all the way up to Southern Jersey... then I278 to I287 to the Palisades. Typically do it in 10-10.5 hours.Plus, you're comparing apples to oranges. Driving daily in and around Charlotte the cops are everywhere. And on the sections of interstates used for commuting, they are all over. So you may get lucky on I95 once in a while while passing through eastern NC, but good luck doing that on I485 or I77 around Tyvola where they typically hide 3-5 cars on the ramp ready to go and have one guy hidden on the overpass on a BMW motorcycle clocking...

I'll likely never travel in 485 nor 77. (I was offerred a job @ BofA with a respectable, NYC type salary level but turned it down because I had/have no interest in working in Charlotte or any location south of DC and north of Orlando.)

The only problem with driving quickly through the Carolinas and Georgia is having a northern license plate. I got pulled over many years ago in SC. I was on a country road with no houses or side streets (nothing but farm land and trees), doing about 60 with a 45 limit.
Officer: "Boy (you know you're goose is cooked when that is the first word out of his mouth), d'you know how fast you was going?"
Me: (with all of the souther accent I could use, given NY plates/license) "No sir?"
Officer: You's doin' 65 there, I cud throw your ass in jail. What's the hurry?"
Me: We're trying to get back to the base, sir." (I was with a friend, cute girl too. We were both stationed at Ft. Gordon)
Officer: "Well, you's in the service and all......(looking at license, registration, and ID card). Get on back but slow down ya hear?"
Me: "Yes sir....."
There were more times in GA that I got pulled for doing only a few over the limit, just to let me go. And all of it was due, I think, to having a NY plate. I did change it to GA when I went back there and never had an issue afterwards.

Meh, Oregon is still stubborn about this. IMO if they don't want to bump up the speed limit on interstates then they should be a bit more lenient with speeders in the far left lane/express lane, and be more strict with people who refuse to go above 60 in said lane.

I e-mailed OSP about going after left lane hogs and didn't get a reply. That says it all to me; they only go after the easy money which are speeders and people on cell phones. It has nothing to do with safety or traffic flow...its all about MONEY because that's what the politicians are after. More of our hard-earned money.

^ - Did you really expect a response from the state police? When I was up there I was given the responsibility of submitting all record requests for the firm to the OSP. We paid for them and it still took forever for a response. I doubt the failure to respond indicates that they are just after money.

Everything around here is clean, new, and upscale. Can't beat it. And when my wife misses her family, airfare is typically $150 or less RT and it's a short 1hr 40min or so flight into Westchester Airport.
But yeah, the cops are more brutal here then I ever had to deal with in NY. Luckily the 5 years we've been here I worked from home for 3 and with the stores "commuted" off times so I never really had an issue. Plus, not many cops pulled over an FJ Cruiser vinyled with ice cream cones and logos

Everything around here is clean, new, and upscale. Can't beat it. And when my wife misses her family, airfare is typically $150 or less RT and it's a short 1hr 40min or so flight into Westchester Airport.
But yeah, the cops are more brutal here then I ever had to deal with in NY. Luckily the 5 years we've been here I worked from home for 3 and with the stores "commuted" off times so I never really had an issue. Plus, not many cops pulled over an FJ Cruiser vinyled with ice cream cones and logos

Six years ago we almost moved to Charlotte but decided against it. We are ocean lovers so wanted to be close so we moved to Hampstead. Nothing here. Have to travel to either Wilmington or Jacksonville.
