holy shit, there are still 55 mph speed limits? I've seen them but I didn't think there were states out there that had them statewide.
65 is good enough for me.... but 55 would make me

The problem with much of the open roads these days is that they are in serious need of upgrades. The two lane interstates/highways don't cut it like they used to. I feel every interstate needs to be three lanes. 1st lane for PASSING, dumbfucks still use it for cruisng , 2nd lane for cruising (and trucks that are passing), 3rd lane for trucks/RVs.
This is just a start, there are many other tactics that can be implemented to clean up the freeways/highways/interstates.

From the CA DMV website:
Unless otherwise posted, the maximum speed limit is 55 mph on two-lane undivided highways and for vehicles towing trailers.

Oregon has tried to pass several bills to raise the speed limit from 65 to 70. It failed because the dumbass lawmakers say it's "too dangerous". The people who run this state are fucking retarded.

Of course, I'm talking about lightly populated areas. Dense areas like Los Angeles and surrounding, and the SF Bay Area would need more for sure.
This is how much of I-40 is through Arizona and New Mexico. Most people obeyed the "passing lane only" rule so getting around slow semis or other slow vehicles was really easy.

I think that in a lot of cases, 4 lane highways (two lanes each direction) would be fine. As long as that the "passing lane" rule is enforced and people obey it, you'd be able to move around the slower vehicles pretty easily.

I've noticed the many times i've driven through AZ that people in Arizona obey the rules and are more courteous about moving over. Which is the complete opposite of the mentality of 90% of the drivers, including truckers, in California. IMHO, it boils down to poor enforcement, and a DMV that is as good as the garbage collection dept. THey may as well be the same office.

i must have missed those when I go by at 70+...
but really around downtown Chicago where I drive every single day, I'd be more than happy to hit even close to 55mph...but it really should be changed once out of the city. The 90/94 is crazy enough, i'd keep it at 55mph limit around the city only.

Here's what's fucked up. The speed limit on the beltway - aka suicide circle - is 55 but you'll be a hazard driving at that speed. Well unless it's rush hour, then you'll be doing 15 if you're lucky.
But head south on 95 where the speed limit is 65 and the majority of people putter along at 60. Maddening.
So if the limit is 55 everyone does 70+ but if it's 65 they mope along at 60.

^thats so true, I even see that with our 55 limit. majority of people just get comfortable anywhere from 55-65, and will NOT go faster no matter what. so if its raised to 70, the people who are finally free to go that fast and beyond will be even more pissed with slow ass drivers.

someone once had a decent idea: colored license plate covers required by law. say Yellow means you are qualified to drive over 70mph, then you are free to do so. but lets say Red people are only qualified to drive up to 65mph; then the Red equiped cars can only drive in the right lanes and if caught going more than 65, get a ticket. also you'll know which drivers to avoid or go around. crazy but it just might solve some problems!!!

wait I can't just go as fast as possible?
The area around here (I-87) cruises at 75-80 with the fast lane going upwards of 90... all in a 65 and 55 zone.
I've seen 8 accidents on 87 in the last 6 months, but 8 out of like 30 million isn't much.
personally I go as fast as I feel comfortable with, which would include police likelihood and traffic volume, whether my child is in the car.. etc. i don't even see what mpg has to do with my CL, yes a truck but seriously I don't see any difference in mpg for speeding.

The Virginia legislature last week passed legislation raising the speed limit on rural interstate highways to 70 mph from 65 mph.

Portland's got ya beat. 50 mph through the city and then 55 in the suburbs.

Really no reason to have the speed limit 55 in Atlanta. Traffic either goes 75 or 35.
Most highways in GA are 65 or 70 outside of Atlanta. I don't think there's a stretch of interstate in this state I haven't driven on.

SWEET! Our last Democratic Governor shut down our rest stops to save money. Now the Republican steps in, opens the rest stops and raises the speed limit! He's also supposed to sign some pro gun bills, one that allows you to carry in restaurants and bars!
Alcohol, guns and higher speeds, Virginia's heading in the right direction!

One other thing I loved about NC was that most of the highways were 65mph, with 70mph limits further out from the city. Sure, there are some 55mph spots... but not many. Compare that with NY where it was 55mph almost everywhere on the interstates and you can see why I like it
One thing I think that needs to be done is a more standard speed limit. It's very annoying driving from NC to NY, being on the same interstate for like 225 miles, and having the speed limit change 40 times ranging from 55mph to 75mph. Any interstate should be 65mph or up with a sign or something that says conditions pending. They need to eliminate so many speed changes on the same road. Of course that will never happen b/c it's revenue driven... but still... very annoying.
