BMW won't change your oil under the free maintenance program if you try to do it before the car says its time, right?

At 11k miles they will most likely do it early for you if you ask.

My dealer does at least.

blow by ... its normal for people that rev high on a consistent basis. Especially in boosted cars. I learned the hardway in my civic.

Just top it off and don't worry about it. Tell him to do his own oil changes at 4k-7k then let the dealer do it again for free every 14k or whatever. 15k OCI on a boosted car.... surprising.

BMWs service is condition based, not a set mileage. If you drive like a complete maniac most of the time you may be due for a service at 7k miles. Cars that are driven very gently may not need a service until 19k even.

Plus I think BMW knows a bit more about engines than 99.9% of those posting on this forum.

Whoops. I had no idea, I just made an assumption from the first few posts in this thread (335i owners) that they had a scheduled maintenance/OCI.

And I would hope they more about engines than 99.9% of AZ members.

Condition Based Service (CBS) was introduced in the E65 7 series (2002 on) and is now in all the cars except the X3 and Z4. Service all depends on the driver. I've done oil changes as low as 3k miles on a CBS equiped vehicle and I've done some at 20k miles. Its actually all based off the fuel injector signal. Essentially the worse mileage you get, the quicker you will need an oil service.

Does the X3 and Z4 go by the one-year/15k schedule then?

They actually use the injector signal as well for the oil services. They seem to vary a lot less though and generally come in roughly around 15k miles.

Oil change is covered only when your car tells you or once a year.

Do they still cover it once-a-year?

I'm curious if that policy has changed because the service interval indicator usually sets the date for two years when you reset it.

I've had to add a quart on two separate occasions, and my car hasn't hit the 15k mark yet. Also, when I took my car in for an unrelated issue, they would not perform the first service (I think I had around 11k miles at that point).

I'm not sure what's the big deal about oil consumption anyway.

My Saturn burned 1 qt every 3k when it first rolled off the assembly line, and to this day it still burns 1qt every 2-3k after 111k.

Oil consumption does not affect engine longevity anyway. We have one guy on our Saturn forum who has 522,000+ miles on his car without a rebuild and he burns one quart every 200 miles.

The once-a-year isn't based on the service interval indicator. They don't reset the service interval indicator if you go in for the once-a-year. So in some cases, you get the once-a-year and than a few months or thousand miles later the car might tell you it's time for an oil change. This only happens if you drive very little miles in a year.
