Absolutely go for it, if you have the time and can get a team.
You will need to find a running junker under the $ limit though, and then make it relatively reliable/fixable under semi-race conditions.

It's a lot of work, especially getting all the safety req's met. Even then, you should make sure your car sticks out to them in a creative way as they only take so many applicants per race. I looked into this a few years ago myself, if you got the time you should do though. You should get an old Vigor (V5 if your name is nbennet) and we could be team Acurazine!

There was one in California in December, IIRC I read about it on this forum. Don't think it turned into anything.
