24 Hours of LeMons
Anyone here ever participate in one of these races? I found out today they're coming to the DC area in a few weeks (too late to enter) but it looks like a blast.

I saw the thread title and was
because I thought OP failed at typing 24 Hours of LeMans. Then I looked at the site mrsteve posted
Waiting for people to buy tickets for the 24 Hours of LeMons, and trying to get into the 24 Hours of LeMans.

) in the past couple of years; the current issue has an interview with John Lamm, the head honcho who started the event originally as a one-shot deal. You need several team members-- at least 4-- and the car is really the least expensive part of the race. I think it's over $2K before the junk car even gets on the track; Lamm summarizes the costs in the C&D interview.

It's $500 to enter a car, plus $100 per driver and you must have 4 drivers and no more than 6. So that's $1,000-1,200 right there. I believe any non-driver pit members are less expensive ($25? $75?)
Your car has to be valued at no more than $500. That means you can buy a $200 car and put $300 worth of parts into it OR you can buy a $1200 car and sell $700 worth of parts off it.
Safety equipment (including a full roll cage and door bars) is not included in the $500.
Wheels, tires, and brakes are not included in the $500.
Every $10 you are deemed to have spent above $500 will cost you 1 lap. I believe the most ever penalized entry was a stripped Mini Cooper S. It was given 1,066 penalty laps.

I'm in, if we can do Monterey, Buttonwillow or SoCal.
I've got a semi-stored 1988 Integra LS 5-speed-- 3 good H- or V-rated tires (1 has cracked sidewalls), everything worked (including A/C) last I checked and probably still worth more than the $500 limit.
Given the $500 limit, you'll need to get a dinged-up example, I would think, rather than one in even decent shape. Maybe a rustbucket CL from Ohio somewhere if you want to stay with an Acura?

With those price limitations, Chevy Cavaliers and such are a better fit unless one wishes to take the penalty points.

Let's do this, Will. We can find a couple other guys to make it up to Buttonwillow.
I've got plenty of vacation time I need to take. I'd love to join in. Ah, but Buttonwillow is the weekend of my wedding. I don't think I'd be able to post-pone that.

An '88 Integra is actually a great choice of a car. You could easily get it down to 2,000 pounds, it has disc brakes all the way around, and (when new) around 115 horsepower.
For reference... '89 Integra listed for sale at $995.
$500 is completely do-able especially if you scrap some of the parts you don't use. Probably could justify the car was only worth $250-300 in stripped condition.

me and my buddy wanted to do it last year, even found a 90 Prelude w/ 4WS..he owns the speedway that its held at for the new england region so i'm sure we'll get around to it one of these summers
The one we found had 180k and just needed a few engine bits replaced and some TLC, for about $450..and this alone makes me not want to get that great of a car- cant be sentimental i guess:
1.4: Claiming Race: At the end of the competition, the organizer--and nobody else, you lazy, better-car-wantin' bastids--may elect to purchase any vehicle from its owner(s) for $500. In other words, don't spend a lot on a cheater, cause if you do, you ain't gonna own it much longer.you don't have to be exactly under $500
Take out the A/C?? Do you know how hot it is in the frickin' Central Valley??!
!
Great.... pull the radio... what else would bring it close $500? Steel wheels from an RS instead of the stock alloys?
We need a couple-three more idiots... umm, I mean... AZ members driver/crew members
-- preferably one with a tow rig or car trailer, for after the race.

Based on Craigslist postings here in LA, the 1988 Integra in decent condition is a $1000-1500 car rather than a $500 car.
Will Y.,
Could you guys get a car from co-part.com for dirt cheap and fix it up for the race? Some require a lot of work to get running .. but the cost would be low to begin with.

I really don't think you guys would have trouble. Especially if you put a few cases of beer and a few bottles of liquor in the trunk prior to rolling it up for the judges. Bribes are encouraged.
Oh and I noticed on the forum many teams are looking for drivers for various events. You have to pay your share to enter (typically $500-850) which covers the cost of the car, entry fee, fuel, tires, etc. Show up and race!
Please point me to the threads involving the event @ Buttonwillow.
