2013 Chicago Auto Show

I've decided, in the interest of time and space, that I am going to go through and update this thread several photos at a time. Otherwise you will never see these photos lol. It would be a big project that I don't have enough time to completely finish and post in one setting.

All of these are available on my flickr at 1920 wide. In the interest of sharpness and quality, I am only posting here at 1024 wide.

So I'll start it off with these:

I must have spent about 20 minutes by this car, just admiring it. What a f*cking work of art. Similar for the MP4-12C Spider.

one extra pic for a certain someone - this car was absolutely gorgeous. I didn't really like it as much in the photos - the rear end looked a bit odd to me - but in person - damn - everything gets clear. And I thought this color looked terrific on it.

One of my colleagues has a 6 Gran Coupe. That is a gorgeous car in person. I agree 100% with you about that.

That Gran Coupe is stunning! The only thing not perfect about it is its name.

I think BMW nailed it with the M6 GranCoupe. All the space of the M5, with the beauty of the M6.

I really liked this car. Well, it was one of the few "classic" style concept cars there.

Was behind a 6 Gran Coupe a few nights ago. The front light setup is ri-dam-diculous like nothing I've ever seen.

I've seen both the 6-series coupe and the 6-series Gran Coupe and honestly they're both fantastic looking cars.

Audi has some work to do with the A7, IMO. Both the CLS and the 6GC are much prettier cars.

I'm not a big photography guy (yet). Are you using HDR in these to get that effect?

yeah its HDR - 3 exposures per image. this is the first time I brought a tripod to the show. and I had a lot of fun with it. I know the style is a bit over-the-top but I like presenting them in that way.

here is a single exposure if you want to see the difference.

I do too. So you're overlaying three images or exposing one image three times?

Oh geez do you really want me talking about HDR... this can get wordy quick, just a warning.

Well neither, really.

You set the camera to auto-bracketing mode (or HDR mode on newer ones) - and usually 3 exposures is enough especially with newer cameras. Hell with newer cameras you can get by with one exposure, if you have Lightroom or Photoshop. I've done that in the past as well. The images at the top from the 2013 show are all processed this way - single exposures.

You ideally must have a tripod to do the 3 exposures, for optimal sharpness. The only time you can kinda get away with not having one is if you're shooting in bright light and have a steady hand or other mechanism to hold steady. But if you have a tripod, you set the 3 exposures mode and then fire the images (if you use the timer it will not only ensure a steady shot and no movement from pressing the button but on most newer cameras it will also fire all 3 exposures successively, which you want because you won't have to touch the camera at all - if you do it without the timer it will pause after each exposure - on most cameras. On newer cameras with specific HDR function for multiple exposures, they can do all exposures regardless of timer setting.

Now there is more than one way to process these 3 exposures. I do it with Photomatix just because that's what I like, but there are a myriad of other programs out there. That program has its own array of customizing options, then you generate the HDR. After this is done for best results you bring it into Lightroom (it goes back into Lightroom if you started the HDR merge from there, which is nice) - do additional tweaking to adjust contrast and things like that - then I export it and open in Photoshop and do some fine-tuning.

That's awesome. Thanks for explaining. About five years ago I did a bunch of photography for my own basketball blog. I learned a lot in that year and started to get better. I didn't have access to strobes so I was really dependent upon the lighting. Got some good shots that really were too dark because of my setup.

But you do NOT HAVE to shoot HDR to get that effect...pending your camera and sensor (and knowing how to process). I never shoot HDR and many people think I do.

I know you probably don't read my posts but I did mention this:
