2005 RL commercial

I was just watching Dr. G and saw a commercial air for the new 05 RL. They said it's the most advanced AWD system?

On a luxury car it is. It's the only luxury car with an intelligent rear differential that is capable of shuttling power left and right.

And I really rather like that commercial (if it's the same one) where the RL is pulling up the dashed lines on the road.

Well, if by car you exclude trucks, then, yeah, it is the only car that can do the left to right.

I still can't believe some of the admins have over 10,000 posts

But if you look at people like TRU, you can understand why it's not hard to do. Plus, you have to see how long those admins have been around.

This got me confused. I was just looking at the MB 4Matic system, and it says it can transfer power to left or right if grip is lost. I thought the way in which SH-AWD is different is that it transfers power to compensate for different rates of wheelspin in a turning radius to improve cornering ability. Can someone clarify for me?

1. The RL is the only car that can actively transfer torque between the left and right wheels.

2. The 4Matic system is not active transfer. It is passive transfer that reacts.

Hope that clarifies it.

I saw a new TSX commercial over the weekend, its with a SSM TSX driving down the street w/ red trails following it, with a couple inside using the navi and they goto a club.

Its been over a year since I saw a TSX commercial, this one looks new.

What defines "passive" transfer?

I took passive transfer to mean that the AWD system just reacts to road conditions, whereas the RL's SH-AWD actively apportions torque between left and right wheels based on the direction of the car turning in order to actually improve handling around corners when road conditions are neutral or the same between all four wheels. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

passive sounds like an LSD, where once it starts slipping it moves the torque to the other wheel. SH-AWD doesn't require slippage of a wheel to transfer torque.

The evo has active yaw control which allows a difference in torque going from side to side.
