2001+ Toyota Tacoma 4WD Experiences?

Friend of mine had a '02 Tacoma until he put it around a tree, but walked away with minor cuts and bruises...truck didn't fare well and was totalled.
The only thing I didn't like about my 4Runner was the auto-locking hubs. They tend to wear the CV-boots out quite quickly. I would suggest changing them out with some Warn manual hubs.

Engines from all brands run forever, woohoo 200k miles bla bla, what really is to be in the spotlight is new boots on the axles, cv joints, etc, wear and tear parts. Doesn't matter how realiable a brand was, every brand has wear n tear.

Are you saying that axle boots and cv joints are prone to failure on this truck?
I was commenting on more than just the engine. I was implying that maintenance in general on this truck is extremely easy.

One of the inspectors that I used to work with had a 4x4 Tacoma. That little thing was bullit proof! He had almost 300K miles on it and almost no problems with it. When going to constuction sites he never had to worry about getting stuck because it was so light, whereas the 4x4 big trucks would get stuck.
You honestly can't go wrong with the tacoma and yes, do get the manual hubs!

And if he didn't place himself on a pedestal and think his shit didn't stink maybe I'd contact him but I think I'll pass on that.

I had a 1999 Tacoma 4x4 kingcab and a 2001 4Runner 4x4. On each, I put over 80k miles in 2 1/2 years and only had one recurring problem (the same) on each: the seal on the fuel cap goes bad and causes a sensor to trip and the engine light comes on. A simple fix for $15, but it happened like 3 times on the Tacoma and 4 or 5 on the 4Runner. I haven't had any problems on my Sequoia and it has 42k miles...
