1965 Mustang Cobra
I've been following this project on another forum for some time and thought I would share with AZ. Basically, this car is a 2003 SVT Cobra with a 1965 fastback body. The motor is currently upgraded with a whipple blower making 550whp. This is probably one of the most amazing builds I have ever seen, especailly because it doesn't even look like much was done. Read more details at http://www.sn65.com/SN65%20chronolog...rder%20new.htm
Anyways, here are some pics:

New style of hybrid for old-school car lovers

The beast in Wayne Julian’s St. Charles garage is something of a Frankenstein for car lovers — but good-looking.
On the outside, it’s a 1965 Ford Mustang fastback with a “Screaming Yellow” paint job.
But strap yourself inside, and you’ll be sitting in the guts of a 2003 SVT Cobra.
Julian’s custom-built machine is a hybrid of sorts — one that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, he says, one that mixes then and now.
The idea was racing around his head for more than a year before he gave it life. But now the car’s dominating competitions across the country and earning international glory on television and the Internet.
It’s called the SN65. And from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, you can see it at his auto body business, 3985 Commerce Drive, St. Charles.
“I’ve got a year and a half of my life in this thing,” Julian said while surveying the car closely, wiping away specks of dust.
Julian and his brother, Bob, had always been fans of classic cars. But they embarked on the “SN65 Project” with the idea of combining everything they like about old cars — their body styles and builds — with the ferociousness, smooth ride and technology of newer models.
They started with the rotted body of the 1965 fastback and essentially rebuilt it around the chassis and features of a Cobra that Julian bought from Ford.
Actually building the SN65 from the two cars was a lengthy, if not frustrating, experience at times, they said. But Julian — with his brother’s help along the way — kept working to make sure every detail under, inside and outside the car was perfect.
A manual that stands about two inches in height details the process with photos and timelines. It includes the process Julian used to install the 4.6 Cobra engine, to meld the old body with the new chassis, and to reconfigure gas tanks, doors, interior and upholstery to create a flawless vehicle that never before existed.
“Everything he did was an attempt to make it look as if it was a factory concept, and not just something he built,” Bob Julian said of his brother.
“Instead of taking an old car and trying to make it look new again, he took a new car and made it look old.”
In March, the SN65 made its debut at the prestigious Detroit Autoramma, bringing home an award for best-engineered out of more than 1,000 vehicles.
It went on to become the first Ford vehicle to place at the Year One Experience, a competition for primarily General Motors and Chrysler products, Wayne Julian said.
In addition, Hot Rod Magazine and television car shows have written about or are airing features on the project. A Web site dedicated to the car also has received more than 10,000 hits.
Julian estimates that about 3,000 hours went into building the car, and its value hovers in the neighborhood of $300,000.
He wants to build more SN65s and, if given the chance, start turning a profit.
“People love the car,” Julian said. “And I think it’s just going to keep going and going.”
Of course, who knows when Julian will be ready for his first commissioned project.
He’s got the SN65 booked on national tours through much of the rest of the year. Plus, the first project took long enough.
Finally finishing it, “was just like, ‘Thank you, Lord. We’re done,’” Julian said

wasn't expecting to see that interior...
Don't get be wrong, it's a really cool project, but I guess if I were gonna have a "classic" car, I would want the interior to match...just my

The interior doesn't bother me. The mustang doesn't have the greatest interior, but it's cool to have all of the modern car features wrapped with a classic body. The project would not have been the same if they would of used the stock 65 stuff
It got the "classic" door handles inside

I am not a fan of using the modern interior, but expect it was a must with this build without a lot more work on an already intensive project. The thing that really bugs me is the wheels, I hate seeing classic cars with such modern shoes, they never look right to me.

Yep, real pain in the ass. Paxton has been making supercharger kits for Mustangs since the 60s....
I have had 5 67-68 Mustangs in the past and all were blown, though 3 were 6-71 through the hood units, but under-hood is just bolt-on.

Have you ever driven a 64 1/2- 68 Mustang even with modern suspension upgrades and brakes? Even the 66 GT350 (best stock of them all) can't begin to hold a handle to a modern chassis.

ummm
Who was this directed towards?
And p.s.
The doors were custom made to match older 65 look. They could have ditched the nasty 03 dash/center console and had a custom dash/center console made as well when they took it to the interior place..

That was uncalled for...
Thats a great project.
But come on, they couldnt have picked a better colour for it? I dont think yellow looks good on that style Mustang. Red with white stripes or white with blue stripes would have made this an ultimate car.
I dont mind the interior, fits with the whole retro-modern theme.

I'm just saying....
It would be a huge PITA to custom make a dash that look like a 65 das and make fit in the fox body chasis. I think its cool to think....."look at that old Mustang...why does it have a new interior"...then you find out what it really is.

I don't mind the interior. This build is incredible.
The engine and suspension are new so why can't the interior be? It kinda symbolizes the new soul of the car and probably draws a lot of interests

I'd prefer the '05+ interior. But a neat project nonetheless.

IIRC, the builder talked about doing a 68 body on an 05 chassis with all the 05 interior. Not sure if they will or not, but this car turned out great and I'm sure that would as well.

awesome drivetrain and car. not sold on the interior but I guess I would have to see it in person to truly appreciate.
I'd like to build a factory 5 Cobra w/ that motor.

Hi Guys,
I don't usually jump in on other peoples conversations, but I noticed a lot of traffic to our website, checked things out, and thought I would stop by and answer any questions you might have.

It is basically stock except for the crate engine, 5 speed, 9" rear, disk breaks, etc...
