1953 gullwing or 2005 gullwing

how many old schoolers do we have here that would take a pristine 300 SL gullwing coupe over the SLR?

would you take original class over speed?

getting your hands on a pristine 300 SL could be just as hard as getting a SLR. (although both require having the funds, the SLR would take take lots of time)

ANYWAYS, a perfect conditioned 300 SL will run you just about the same as a SLR.

whats is gonna be gentleman?

This Roadster's base price, with hardtop and soft top, was $11,670. Accessories listed on the sales invoice included a crate for the top, $18.59; a radio, $295.10; seat belts, $23.95; license-plate frames, $9.30; and undercarriage protection. $15.00, for a grand total of $12,031.94.
todays price at an auction for pristine SL~ $450,000

No brainer ... gullwing anyday.

This poll reminds me of that one Porsche commercial where an old guy comes out of a coma ... takes his Porsche spider out of storage and sees a new Boxster. He says, "Holy schmoley" and then the commercial cuts to the guy in the Boxster staring back at that old guy's spider. I loved that commercial.

The 300SL is the BEST looking car ever created in my opinion. The SLR can't even compare.....

The SLR is what Jay-Z drives.

The 300SL is what Humphrey Bogart drives......

They don't make 'em anymore, so it'll appreciate instead of depreciate...

You can always buy a late model gullwing...ah... later

I'm a little older than you man but I'd take a brand new SLR over a '53 gullwing any day.
to me I like Fuel Injection, navigation system, all today's modern electronics. plus the raw HP on the SLR is UNREAL I've driven a lot of old car(like old Cameros, old Chargers, old Mustangs), when I get back into newer cars I think I'm glad cars advance as much as they do.

if i had that much money. to spend about 1/2 million on a car. I wouldn't want a car for show purpose only. I want a car also for "balls out" speed and show purpose also. which the SLR fits the bill nicely.

Besides the guy in the picture looks like he barely even fits in the 300 SL.

^ agreed

if i had, say, a 5 million dollar car collection, then i would mind having an antique car just to cruise around in

If you can afford the SLR, you can probably afford to get a 300SL too. But, I can almost promise you that the 300SL would get you far more stares, and drop far more panties than the SLR ever could. And there are quite a few cars I'd buy over the SLR. It's overrated.

I had a professor who collected Mercedes, and he had one..... used to tool around the campus in it from time to time, and it was a truly stunning car. Looked like it was going fast even when it was standing still
