Other guys have done it before even on Chrysler's K-car series. Problem is the 4-cyl engines don't last long when you stress them out that much...

It's kinda like a top fuel 4 banger; it needs to be rebuilt frequently. Like after every few runs... or it'll go booom!
The Veyron and it's engine can handle the power in the long run...

lot depends on how the motor built. there's Supra TTs i read all the time doing in this range 1000-1100 hp. I'll admit they have impressive machine work on the engine and a crazy set of turbos but if built right they can hold together. 
Machine work aside...
It's more about the wear on the main bearings and rods/pistons. Bigger engines displace the energy (HP/torque) over more surface area/material (larger crank, more rods/pistons/bearings). You push materials to their limits with small engines. Thus you get high wear rates on all of your parts. I'm sure they do major maintenance on the engine frequently. i.e. main bearing changes and what not... Just think about the stress one piston and it's associated bearings go through producing over 250hp each. And the stress the connecting rods/crank/main bearings go through. Premature wear is inevitable... the tensile strength of materials is only so good.
