in the $150 range, you can probably get a used Escort/Passport x50 or Beltronics RX65 (basically the same unit, they are the same company)...
try eBay. I know Best Buy has an "outlet" listing on eBay where they sell demos/"open box" and sometimes brand new stuff for cheap. I bought a GPS from them it was brand new (NOT open box or returned item), they'll say the condition on the description.

I would get a Cobra and pay a little more for the 15 band unit (XRS 9745). I have only owned 4 detectors in 20 years and two were Cobras and served me well. They don't false much, are rugged, and work pretty well. I now have a Sti Driver that works even better but it also costs a lot more. The $169 cobra would serve you well- consider the extra $69 as 'insurance' (especially if you normally buy extended warranties with your electronics anyway). This would be insurance for reducing the chances of getting a ticket and having a unit that lasts about 7-10 years. A speeding ticket is at least the $169 where I drive.

^ It depends what you expect out of it. I bought my new cobra for around 100 and it works perfectly fine on the freeway where I live.
It's already saved my ass a few times as I usually cruse around 85 in 70.
If you want something for more urban areas with directional guidance etc there are better options. I don't speed through congested areas anyway so what do I need a detector for that tells me the cop is sitting at the rallys on the right opposed to the mcdonalds on the left :/

^ I agree. Any detector is better than nothing. Just getting one ticket between now and when you get the 'ultimate' detector will cost you dearly in fines and added insurance costs. You can always trade in the temporary detector when you have the $ to buy the great detector later- Bel offers a $80 trade-in one example which isn't bad if you paid $100 for a temporary detector in the interim.
I would really debate the greatness of arrows and would much rather have range and low false-alerts like I seem to have with the STi Driver but that is another debate.
