02 Maxima 6mt vs 05 TL 5at

The 02 Maxima 6mt surprised me completely stock, i thought the 05 TL 5at with mods with smoke it, but in fact the 02 Maxima beat the TL!

I guess you have never driven the maxima, that VQ motor is a beast compared to our J series when it comes to torque.

I had crappy mods back then lol... short ram + crushed bent 2.25" exhaust FTL.

I was about to run the maxima again wth my current mods (cai, atlp jpipe, atlp quads, ur pulley, tb/im spacers) but he sold the maxima =[ so now i will never know if i can take on a stock 6spd with these mods lol

and 5at has horrible gearing, every time it shifts it falls back due to not being in powerband

A well driven stock 6MT Maxima should takedown a 3G TL 5AT even with basic boltons. As indicated above (and judging by my son's own Alti V6 5MT), VQ35s w/MTs can be monsters with the biggest x-factor being off-the-line traction.

I drove an 03 I35 back to back with an 03 TL-S and the TL felt gutless by comparison....granted, both cars were used and who knows how they were kept.

I 100% agree. I test drove an 03 TLs before I got the 04 I35.

im the opposite. i went from a maxima to tl-s.... my dad is the opposite of me. tl to maxima. i have been itching to get into an 02/03 6speed maxima for a little while but it seems like a giant step to the side in terms of an upgrade so im just holding out a little while to afford something better... but definitely do not underestimate the VQ's they are no joke.

In all fairness to the TL in the orig post, that AT really kills the power output of the J32. (I sort of know how that feels owning an 07 AV6 5AT and having driven the 07 AV6 6MT a few times.)

Comparing apples to apples, the AT in the 5.5G Maxima and Alti V6 does not choke off nearly as much power....and is only hampered a bit by gearing IMHO. I tend to doubt that bolt ons for the TL 5AT take its performance anywhere close to that of a stock TL 6MT....which is what I would like to see run against a 5.5G 6MT.

^^ Agreed but the low end torque from the VQ is what makes it a winner, does anyone know how much does the maxima weighs?

I have a friend with a 2004 Altima V6 5AT with intake and I'm bone stock he is roughly a car slower.

Like Acura, Nissan 5A/T versus 6M/T trims are incredibly drastic as far as 1/4 is concerned. Some people can't even imagine how 1 extra gear and a 60 or so lbs less makes such a drastic difference, but believe me it does.

Yeah the TL is the most fuel efficient non-hybrid V6 that I can think of.

VQ35DE's do not respond that well to intake mods so, that is a wash at best.

As far as 1/4 mile times go, a well prepped well driven Alti 5AT can post times of ~14.5 @ 94-95 mph versus the 5MT's 14.2 @ 99mph (<--my son). The TL 6MT is quicker (or should be) than .3 sec and 4 mph over its 5AT counterpart.

I still love the TL at night though, such a light show with the side LEDs.
But the Maxima is awesome.

Yeah, too bad we can't be like the sophisticated folks in MD who "slam" their family sedan. Nice whip bro!

Playful humor guys...just thought it hilarious to see an Altima being raced.

Sorry dude, but a crush bent exhaust isnt going to rob any power from your stock internal car, non forced induction car. Plus dyno testing proved on my TL that a full cat back gave me similar gains as an axle back. I made a few more horses, lost a few lbs of tq. down low, and my power across the board was about the same.
No matter which way it goes down the VQ makes torque. And people are always comparing peak numbers. That Maxima lays down some sick power under the curve, that is why it can hang or beat out a newer TL auto.

02/03 maximas are the fastest maximas built and the 3.5VQ is also one of the best v6 engines IMO. Their low end torque is amazing...and to anyone who says its just a crappy FWD 4 family car, go drive one! I had an 00 maxima 3.0VQ and was looking to purchase an 02/03 maxima, but got a 2002 Acura CL-S last minute only to join this board and read all about the tranny issues

check out maxima.org
It's a great site with a ton of nice looking 5.5gen maximas

Yeah, I was actually really close to pulling the trigger on a 03' Maxima but I decided to ride my Legend out for a little longer. The only thing I hated about it was the handling....felt like a boat, and this was coming from a Legend

yea the maximas handling definately isn't the best, but is easily fixed. Just add rear sway bar and front strut tower bar(even thought the front is mostly cosmetic). A drop also helps. The 00-03 maximas look sick with the 350z 6 spoke rims

I would have definately picked up a max, but they are so hard to come by in the SE package with black leather and heated seats

Aside from HID-theft, the handling on the 5.5G does leave a lot to be desired...and this likely the only area where I like my AV6 better.

Navi became available in the 02-03 Maxima but, it is a CD-ROM....which means you would need disks for several regions of the country assuming you plan to drive beyond your home region. Same deal with the I35 I believe. That said, Navi 5.5G models on the used car market are few and far between. Advice: get a loaded 6MT and add a Pioneer AVIC-D3, which fits the dash well provided you get this .
