* Official Winter Beater Thread *

Im looking for a winter ride and I found one here for a good price, I talked to the seller and nothing is mechanically wrong with the car and the body is in pretty good shape. Its got the 1.6L B13 motor, auto trans (unfortunately), 194 000Km (120 000 miles)

Ive searched the Sentra forums and I cant really find anything wrong with the cars... Does anybody here have experience with the car, and whats their reliability like?

Thanks

I'm looking at a 91 also today. More miles though. A friend had a 92, & it was a tank. Had no power steering, windows, locks, radio, or AC, but could drive 600 miles on a full tank of gas(5 speed).

Friend has one, he has blown 2 motors. Dont know why, becuase they both were low miles and he daily drives the car to save money on gas. It's very well maintained.

All in all, I think they are decent cars for a beater. My mom has one of the newer ones and my dad had an older one. Thay always worked well for them. I think the only problem that my dad had was the axles.

I bought a 93 for a college car and its still in the familiy. I got it with 76K miles on it and it now has 160K miles and I have never changed anything other than normal wear stuff such as tires, brakes, etc... With normal maintence the GA16DE engine will run forever

B13 is the chassis code.
The engine is a GA16DE, 1.6 liter, DOHC.

The car is very reliable from what I gather in my time on the Sentra forums.
I have a B14 (165k miles) that's been nothing but spectacular, reliability wise.

The only things I've done are maintenance (clutch, sparks/wires, brakes).
Still get about 40-45 mpg on mostly highway driving.

I've never really heard anything bad about them and used to work at a nissan dealership...only complaint I had with driving them is the acceleration is quite slow (especially the autos). Other than that, they're definitely good cars.

Thanks everybody for the info, but a buyer showed up at his house with cash in hand. He hadnt ever seen the car, he just bought it based on his view in the pictures... I was set to look at it tomorrow, but shit happens...

The search continues...

But maybe if samkws's mechanic has got a nice one, I might end up with one anyways

my friend has a 92 that he quickly resolved that problem by dropping an SR20 motor and is pushing 16lbs of boost through all on a stock tranny... i have pics on my home comp... that car is def reliable in my eyes after all i have experienced with it...

Try to find a old 91-92 Sentra SE-R Classic. Some people call them the BMW 3 series copy.

They are a fun car and 140 hp.

I'd take a 2nd generation Saturn S-Series beater over ANY beater...

Spend $500 to fix it up, and it could easily last you another 100k miles.

Yep, my mom has a '96 Saturn SL2 w/94k on it. Once I do a few "repairs," it can easily last another 100k. Check out saturnfans.com

Saturns are junk since GM took over. Stay away. The best saturns were the boxy ones.

GM didn't really "takeover" until the introduction of the ION in 2003. The 1996-2002 model Saturns were best IMO. Great fuel economy if you fix the inexpensive "little" problems, and last virtually forever provided that you keep up with maintenance and the oil consumption.

For the amount of snow I get here towards January-March, I'd really like an Toyota FJ...as a beater.

picked up my winter ride a few weeks ago...1992 accord LX. the dealer did a ridiculous amount of high priced repairs* prior to the purchase, so it should last me quite a while.

*timing belt/water pump, full exhaust, front rotors, front wheel bearings, etc.

156k miles on it...5spd.

$3600 for mine...obviously a bit high for the year/mileage vehicle, but after factoring in the repairs done to it, that will save me over the long haul. for me, buying a $500-$1500 car would have resulted in the same amount spent after fixing it up, etc.
