The SP5000 is very good for its price range and very bright, but I want to upgrade to something with deeper blacks, I guess I prefer DLP over LCD personally. (not to get into the DLP vs LCD debate which can go on and on forever )

Just wanted to chime in here on what a great PJ this is...
I've owned two Infocus projectors in the past and I'm now on my third (X1, sp4805 and sp7200) I bought each one used and they all were solid as a rock. One of the best things about Infocus, besides the picture quality, is the fact that they use the above mentioned M1 connector, which basically means that it will never be outdated. (M1 to HDMI, M1 to DVI, M1 to VGA or just plain old COMPONENT) not to mention they're always coming out with new designs so u can pick up a used one like this, which retailed for $1300.00 less then a year ago, for 500 bux.
NEways I hope this isn't consdered highjacking but i just wanted to throw in my $00.02

Well said about Infocus products.
I too, have owned both the X1 and SP4805 projectors. Even at 480p native resolution, they were simply amazing. Especially when I paired the SP4805 pixel mapped with a Bravo D1, the image was like a movie theater screen.
The SP5000 is a step up from the SP4805 in resolution (720p) and brightness, but some say being a LCD projector, black levels are not as good but not far off. Personally, I've noticed it slightly only in very dark scenes. With either projector, people always get amazed by the picture when they come over for a movie.

how is the picture quality in a room with a lot of windows in the day time?
do you need a screen or can it just be shined onto a wall?
lastly whats the best distance to mount from screen?
thanks

I also am an owner of InFocus products and they are definitely top notch. Your pics alone look amazing, I can imagine how great it looks in person. The price is phenomenal for the minimal use. Someone pick this up! If I didn't just buy a TV, I would have jumped on this.

As with any projector, a screen is not a neccesity. You can always project onto the wall. What matters is the color, texture, and grain of the paint on your wall, so results will vary. However, to my eyes, the difference between using my screen and projecting onto the slightly off white wall in my house, is not dramatic. The most noticeable difference to me is actually the black border in my screen which gives it a much better appearance.
As far as dealing with ambient light, if you read reviews on this projector, ppl have described it as a 'torch'. Mind you, you won't get the same picture quality as you would in a light controlled room, but this projector can handle ambient light well. I used it in a room with two windows (room is about 12' x 12'), and never had problem with not being able to get a decent picture during the day time.
Distance-wise, I'm not really an expert, but I think the general rule is to use a distance about 2.5 times the size of your screen (?). As an example, I'm projecting a 92" screen (without any zoom) at a 12' distance. If you need some calulations, projectorcentral.com has a nice flash applet that will do the calculation along with some diagrams. Here's a link after selected for SP5000: http://www.projectorcentral.com/InFo...calculator.htm
Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback/vouch from another fellow Infocus owner!

waiting to see how much money i have left over after buying 240sx shell and JDM sr20det engine. If i still have money left over, i'll highly consider buying this.
I had an infocus projector freshman - junior year of college, and i loved it. ended giving it to one of my friends as his graduation present (that's all he wanted from me hahaha).
