I like Canon P&S's. I used to have an SD 550 and then sold that and got an SD 700 IS which I have now.
Staples has the SD 850 IS for $200 after 2 rebates this weekend. Newegg has it for $250 without any rebates, and with a 2GB SD card. Here's the dp review page: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsd850is/

That's what I would get now since it's not the top of the line model (950IS), and the price is right.

The Canon SX100 has not been getting good reviews for picture quality in low light. I would suggest looking at the SD850 and the SD870.

Just jumping in here instead of starting another thread - gonna jump on a new P&S and looking at the Canon SD750 - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...ital_Elph.html

Thoughts? Any other suggestions?

Sonny, for not much more (or the same price w/ rebates) you can get the 850 IS - and IMO, the IS makes a world of difference with a P&S, especially for shots where you don't want to use the flash.

Can't imagine that would be too good for the camera, but whatever floats your boat sonnyboy. Remind me not to loan you any equipment.

OK, refreshing this thread....Canon PS S5 IS or PS G9?

My little boy pretty much torched my S3 IS. Now I need a new P&S with about the same features, including movie capture--very important to me. I'm still not ready for a true DSLR.

My options are:

Buy another S3 IS--I really liked it a lot and they are still available for a reasonable price

Buy an S5 IS--an incremental improvement from the S3, available for only $30-40 more on Amazon, and can use SDHC cards--but has the SD card port in the battery compartment (WTF?)

Buy a G9--the main advantage to this one is that it has RAW support and I can finally start playing with that format in Photoshop Essentials. However, I give up the superzoom of the S series, which I also used.

Comments? Thanks!

RAW mode on the G9 is really slow, so it's only really useful when you're taking time between shots. Otherwise, I'd probably just keep it on JPG. The S5 is a great cam and I think you'd appreciate it since you had an S3 before...

Yeah, I'm not too happy with the G9. It's a great camera. But not what I was expecting. I thought it would guve me a little of both worlds, It does to a degree, but there's still nothing like SLR's. I do try to keep it on RAW, but for a p&s it doesn't work as well as I thought it should.

It takes some nice pictures, but I should have went with SD870IS, for a p&s.

Wow, I hadn't heard about that complaint with the G9. It's looking like either another S3 or an S5 for me then. I don't know much about the 870IS, how well does it do video capture?

I wouldn't say a complaint, but disappointment. I'm a slr shooter, I was just looking for more in a $500 camera. The G9 does video well, it's does it in 1024x768 @ 15fps. That's the most of any Canon p&s.

If you're a p&s shooter you'll be very happy with the G9.

Still sounds like the S3 or S5 for me, and more likely just another S3 unless there's a good argument for one of the newer cameras. The more I look and read about this group of cameras, the more the S3 seems to be the sweet spot for what I use a camera for.

And what's this with putting all these pixels on almost the same size CCD? It seems to almost negate the entire idea of having more pixels in these advanced P&S cameras?

People buy the meag pixels, a day the camera companies will learn better, not more. Though Canon has stepped up their software and cpu, while adding more pixels to their sensors. A bit of a trade off that does really fly in the eyes at the ones who know whats going on.

i would suggest the Fujifilm f40fd just cause i recently was in the market for a p&s. what sold me was the low light capability of this camera which would come in handy imo. there's a 50$ rebate program running till the end of this month. total cost = 129$ from beachcamera.

From what I've read, word of mouth is that Fuji screwed the 40, it's not as good as Fuji's 30 when it comes to low light. And many on passing on it.

I ended up with another S3 IS. Definitely the sweet spot for all the cameras I was looking at. The video from the camera is amazing. Even though it's "only" 6 MP, I was very impressed with its image quality and features.

I bought it at Beach Camera for $269--I bought the first one for MSRP at the time it was released ($499), so I got a good deal.

I also bought a LensMate 52 mm tube because a) this will protect the lens a little better from my little boy and b) it will make it easier to add accessory lenses. I keep hearing good things about them, so I thought I'd give the device a try.

it's true the f40fd is not as good as it's older sibling, the f30fd. However, basing the f40fd in low lighting compared to the current cameras inthe market, the f40fd still stands out as one of the better p&s low light cameras. You probably could find a f30fd on ebay, but my underestand is that they're selling for more then the orginial msrp. F40FD is probably your best bet now if you want a new camera w/ low light capability for a decent amount. You can get the 40fd at beachcamera for 129 after the 50$ manufacturer rebate.

My next p&s will likely be the canon a570IS. It's cheap, pretty small (not as small as the SD series), has manual controls and can be "hacked" to add RAW and other functions (live histogram, battery indicator, Zebra Mode and more). Other Canons can also be "hacked" without the risk of screwing up the camera. See the links:

I've been shopping the G9 due to needing (or wanting) a compact SLR alternative for travel, but after messing around with one for the last couple of days at Best Buy, I think I'll pass. It just isn't responsive enough, and I'm not even comparing it to my 40D. It's slowish compared to my SD700IS, and that has me baffled. I took the 700 in and did a side-by-side. The G9 doesn't lock focus as quickly and the shutter lag feels slower. Not a whole lot slower, but for a compact touted as Canon's flagship model, I guess I just expected more.

I really, really wanted to like this camera, and I know from reviews it does take high quality images, albeit noisy ones, but I think I'll wait for the next G series to come out.

The concept of the Sigma DP1 appealed to me when it was in the design phase, but now that it's available it's a pretty disappointing setup. The new Oly 420 looks great with that pancake 25mm for a high-end pocketable camera.

I was fooling around on dpreview.com and found that the S3 can be hacked to provide RAW via the CHDK hack, but the newer Digic III Canons can't (though the functionality is built into the G9). I'm going to do this ASAP so I can play around with the functionality. I guess it goes to show that newer is not always better.
