Want to get back into this..
Sold my camera and lens about 2 years ago. Now I want to get back into it.
Any recommendation on set up under $1500 budget? Think I just need a body and wide angle lens.
I will mainly be shooting my cars and my wife and puppies.
Thanks guys.

Hit up POTN, find a low mileage and good condition body (40D is a good one) for ~$500-600, grab an excellent condition 17-40mm f/4L for ~$700.
If you want a prime, grab the 50 1.4 and save the money for other things.
If you want a new body, get whatever the newest Rebel is and the previously mentioned used 17-40.

Full frame go with the 6d and kit lens can be found for around 1500. Personally I would do that, or you could go with a 5dmk2 and spend the left over cash on glass. Used 7d and glass is doable for 1500. I like canon and their products have served me well, I probably won't change. I am going to be upgrading to full frame soon and looking at the 5dmk3

Not at all overkill, OP wants to shoot cars, been shooting cars for years now, if you want good results you go with a good camera. Sure there are point and shoots that can do well but they are expensive as well so for the money just go with a used dslr, the Op is experienced with canon dslrs so why not get another one. Puppies and wife are just a bonus with a nice camera, thanks though.

Wife + Puppies certainly deserve some quality images, don't you think? haha
You have a chance to do it right this time... /rt
Don't count it out because of the name. The entry level bodies offered, have very good IQ and great lowlight capabilities.

To be honest...For what you want I would look into mirrorless systems.
I know you are used to Canon, but if you haven't really used one in two years than it won't be too difficult to pick up on a new system.
There are so many great offerings in the mirrorless world that come well with in your budget and will perfect fit your main subjects.

Help me out!
Take a look at some of the stuff I posted in the random images that you took thread, most of that stuff was done with either a 40D or Rebel XT with an L lens.
My recommendation was to save you some cash for what you might discover later on. For example, buy the set up I said (or similar) and then also find out you want to get a 50mm 1.4 on top of it. Now you have two stellar lenses and a good body for them to go on for the same price as a full frame.
I'm not at all knocking full frame, I'm going to be buying one shortly so if you decide that that's the way you're going to go, I'm not going to get all butt hurt over it. In fact, I'll likely be jealous...
I'll likely even keep it after I get my 5D2 just for the crop telephoto advantage.
Tell me about it... But in good light or long exposures, the body is fantastic. It has all the good features and excellent build quality. I wouldn't buy anything newer than the 50D in the X0D line simply for the build quality.
