Thinking of "renting" a 5DmkII

I'm going to London and Paris in July/August and was thinking of getting a 5DmkII for the trip. Renting would cost around $500, which isn't worth it to me. I really can't justify buying one to keep. So I was thinking of buying one, using it for the trip and then selling it. I'm checking to see if I can still get it for less than retail, so I should be able to sell it for very little loss.

Thoughts? Am I missing something - other than needing to add a 24-70 and making sure the wife doesn't kill me?

I did the trip with my D100 a few years ago. Sure the D3 would have been awesome at the time, but I got some great shots. Just rock what you have.

I did the trip to London with the 30D a few years ago - that trip is why I bought the 30D in the first place. Going back with the 10-22 and a tripod will be the only real difference. That, and I'm going to insist on having time just for shooting - especially since my wife will be in London 10 days before I get there.

I was just thinking if it doesn't cost much (<$200) in losses, it might be worth it. Though, I'm a dead man if I fall in love with the mkII.

If you want FF, just buy a used 5D, if not buy what you need for your 30D. I have never been able to buy something to go on vacation. I'd rather spend more on the vacation.

What is it you want to do during your trip that you won't be able to do with the camera you already have?

Stop trying to turn this into a logical discussion!!

I just really wanted the low light/high ISO capabilities for inside some of the Cathedrals. There really is no real need for the 5DmkII. I'm actually better off not tempting myself to keep it. Nevermind.

(Spock's voice) Logic dictates, that using a tripod, that any ISO and shutterspeed can be used to achieve the wanted results.

Spend the money on an extra day in Paris instead.
(Or buy a used 5D)

Buy it then sell it. I do that all the time. Usually I find that if I buy something used I barely lose out at all. Sometimes if you find a good deal you make money! In the last two years I've had a 40D (sold at a profit of $100 after parting it out) D300 (sold at loss of $100) and a D700 (keeping this one for a while).

Lenses definately hold their value so I never hesistate to buy a fairly priced used lens, keeping it for a few months or for shoots I need then selling it.

The hard part though is selling the gear once you have it!

Bingo.

This idea has been forcibly removed from my mind.

Well, not really. I just don't think it will happen. There are just too many things that would have to go with it: lenses (my main lenses are EF-s), batteries, more CF cards, divorce lawyer, etc.

I'll just wait until I can actually afford to own one, even if it will be a while.
