Interesting. RX0 announced.
Sony’s New RX0 Camera Combines Acclaimed RX Image Quality with an Ultra-Compact, Waterproof and Robust Design
BERLIN, Aug. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Sony – a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer – has today announced new type of camera which offers entirely new imaging possibilities for today’s creators.
The RX0 (model name: DSC-RX0) marries the hallmark leading image quality of the Sony RX series with advanced photo and video capabilities, all compressed into a robust and ultra-compact body.
Designed to facilitate creative expression beyond current limitations, RX0 is equally adept at shooting still images or filming video on its own, as well as when included as part of a multi-camera set-up to maximize creativity. Its miniature dimensions and all-around versatility allow creators to approach unique photographic and videographic challenges in new ways, always with the assurance of high quality results.
Weighing just 3.9 oz10 and measuring approximately 2.38 in. x 1.63 in x 1.19 (WxDxH)11, the RX0 redefines how small and light a premium compact camera can be. The new model can be used as a standalone camera or as part of a multi-camera rig in any kind of shooting conditions including rain, underwater, space-limited, sandy or dusty environments and more.
Stimulating Imaginations
Multiple RX0s can be linked together in a variety of ways to film and produce unique content like bullet-time, time-slice and many other unique styles of content creation. Sony’s wireless radio commander, the FA-WRC1M can be used to trigger up to fifteen12 RX0’s simultaneously, while Sony’s PlayMemories™ Mobile13 app allows up to five RX0 models to be connected and controlled wirelessly from any paired device. A wireless multi-camera shooting solution capable of connecting additional RX0 units when an access point is used14 is currently under development with a target release date of January 2018 via firmware update. For users looking for a more reliable wired connection, a camera control box is being developed and will also be released in January 2018.
Power Packed
The new RX0 camera features a 1.0-type stacked 15.3 MP6 Exmor RS CMOS image sensor, BIONZ X™ processor and a wide-angle ZEISS® Tessar T* 24mm F4 fixed lens to deliver high resolution and less distortion results for both RAW and JPEG stills and across all supported video formats. It is equipped with an Anti-Distortion Shutter that can shoot as fast as 1/32000 second, as well maximum burst shooting capability at up to 16 fps, ensuring that even fast moving objects are beautifully and accurately rendered. Its small size also makes it an ideal choice for casual shooting, street and travel photography and more.
The new portable RX0 is waterproof1,2 at depths of up to 10 meters (33 ft) on its own, and can be used at up to 100m15 (330 ft) depth when paired with the new MPK-HSR1 Housing. The camera is shockproof3,1 when dropped from up to 2 meters (6.5 ft) and crushproof4,1 to 200kg / 440lb / 2000N, making it durable enough to withstand tough shooting conditions including rain, sand, dust, snow and more, where traditional cameras simply cannot operate.
Video Excellence
On the video front, the RX0 is packed with a variety of creative and powerful features including super slow motion capture8 at up to 960 frames per second, 4K clean HDMI output to an external recorder as well as MF assist and Peaking to adjust focus to exact preferences of the creator, as well as Preset Focus options which enhance control. The camera also offers Picture Profile options and S-Log2, as well Time Code / User Bit features, which are extremely useful for multi-camera shoots.
Full Range of Accessories
To maximize the potential of RX0, a host of new accessories are available that support new and different ways of shooting. - Approximately 42.4 million effective pixels 35mm full frame Exmor R CMOS back-illuminated image sensor
- Sensitivity range: ISO100-ISO3200 (extended to 12400)
- In autofocus / auto exposure tracking mode, continuous shooting frame rate up to about 10 / sec
- The autofocus speed is increased by about 2 times , with the coke speed increased by about 2 times and support the focus control tracking
- Support dual media slot
- 399 focal plane phase detection focus
- 14bit RAW
- 15 stops Dynamic Range
- Battery capacity increased by about 2.2 times
- USB 3.1 Gen 1 is compatible with USB Type-CTM connector and flash terminal is synchronized
- The α7R III can capture outstanding 4K high resolution motion images with 5K (15MP) oversampling, as well as a new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) image configuration file,
Support real-time HDR workflow, can capture a wide dynamic range of high-precision fresh dynamic images, no color gradient processing. - In the α7R III on the new pixel conversion multiple shooting mode, make full use of the fuselage 5-axis anti-shake function, to achieve high-resolution images. In this mode, the camera moves in 1 pixel increments and shoots four separate pixel moving images, containing a total of about $ 99.44 million pixel data. The four images can be synthesized and processed using the software from the new Imaging Edge Intelligent Imaging Application Center. This mode allows for higher resolution and color accuracy of still images, which are more ideal for shooting themes with complex details and colors for architecture, artwork, or other still life.

a7rIII is a beast. I'm totally preordering it.
I had my eye on the 7rII but it had some dealbreaker issues. They've fixed that plus more. Way more.
My biggest issue with it is I wish it had less MP. I don't need or want that many MP and it just makes
file size bigger and increases processing time!
I had a great time with my canon 5d mk III, but It's time for me to move on to an EVF (I always wanted a live histogram).
and video refocusing during shooting was complete crap.

Love it but I can't justify spending that kind of cash on a body that I don't use for a business. Still waiting for that A7III Sony...
The 24-105 looks interesting but also quite big. I switched to Sony for size and bigger lenses wouldn't help with that. I still really love using my prime lenses, so sharp.

I used to carry around the standard 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 all F2.8. I started leaving the 70-200 at home since it's a brick and I didn't use it THAT much. But I do miss it sometimes.
Short term I will probably get the metabones adapter and live with the 16-35/24-70.
I don't use F2.8 much anymore (although in theory it helps focusing). I really think I would be content with a set of quality F4 lenses.
Which in theory should be smaller/lighter since they're F4.
I prefer zooms so I don't need to juggle lenses although a set that fits in the fanny pack of my rotation180 pro would still be tolerable
I guess. I'd still rather get it framed right in the field.
Strangely, there doesn't seem to be a particularly good midrange F4 zoom for Sony. I see mixed reviews all over.
I'm thinking to mix the new 24-105 F4 with maybe a voigtlander 15mm F4.5. This assumes the 24-105 is good.
I'd like the ultra wide brighter, but I'm not sure the Batis 18 2.8 is wide enough - I do shoot 16mm a lot.
I've decided to wait on the preorder - no use getting it until the MB adapter is updated to work with the a7riii.

For the lens speed part...you can get away with f4 lenses on Sony because you can jack the ISO and not really worry about it. Only part you'll want the faster lens is for shallow DOF which is where the primes come into play.

And such is the trade off of going with full frame on mirrorless. If your goal is to downsize...you wont get quality optics without them being the same size as regular DSLR glass.
#747
My 28/2 and 55/1.8 are both smaller than the 50mm 1.8 I had from Canon...so not always the case. It is definitely true for zooms though.

Someone clear this up for me. The A7 body is the step below the top,of the line A9? Sells for about $2500, and doesn't have a drive dial on the body? It's in the menu? Is the A9 the only body with a drive dial?
Sells for $3200

That's why you can have those megazooms cameras (highly underrated!) that don't weigh 100 pounds.
It was always amusing when people looked at my 70-200 F2.8 and assumes it has some HUGE zoom, and I'm like, "uh, it's not even 7x zoom....." and people @@
Certainly you can have bigger/smaller full frame lenses.

Closest thing is you can set the c3 button to be the 'drive mode' button. So it's easy to change, although can't see what mode it's currently in.
I'm new to the sony world but from what I can tell the A7s are the ones below the A9. Although each A7 model has it's own niche, so to speak.

I think the point is with a smaller imaging sensor, the lenses can all 'scale down' equally, and also the required distance between lens to sensor shrinks as well.

No, it means the ratio of wide to tele is 5x. So you could have a 50mm-250mm zoom and that would be "5x". Or you could have a 10mm-50mm zoom and it would be "5x" though they are two very different things.
