Scanning/Digitizing old prints - How?

I am looking to digitize a significant volume of photo prints (or negatives). Has anyone ever done this? Did you do it yourself, or use a service? Experiences?

I've done it myself and it was a pain in the ass.

I would get the bulk of your images scanned at moderate resolution that will let you make 8x12 prints, then step it up a notch for your best shots. It will probably cost $0.25 - $0.45 per slide for your bulk scans, but you can expect to pay $20 or more per image for a shop that will do monitored high-resolution scans of your best images.

Dan, What's the name of that place that you and SS were talking about where you can rent workstations? If JLatimer is near you, sounds like that place would be perfect.

I took a bunch of negatives to Costco. The quality was alright, but I think the negatives themselves weren't that great to begin with. Cost was pretty reasonable, IIRC.

www.pikto.ca is the place I use. It's an hour's drive for us to get there, but I always enjoy going. There are so many pros that hang out there regularly to do prints for clients. It's really cool to see what everyone has been shooting recently. You see anything ranging from The Tragically Hip's touring photographer to Michael Reichmann.

BUMP! back to life!

This past weekend I was at my parents house helping them clean and organize their stuff as they are now moving from my childhood home into something smaller and more manageable for them since my brother and I are now out on our own. We have boxes and boxes of old photos and albums from when we were kids and when my parents were dating etc. I'm thinking that it might be best to look at digitizing them as a back up for the original prints. Since this thread is from back in 2007 I was wondering if anyone has found other companies that would be able to bulk scan the photo's for me.

I used a local company to do my wedding pictures. I would not trust sending anything by mail or such with one of a kind items such as family pictures.

You might want to get something like this.
