Road Trip North
Road Trip North
The wife and I drove to the Yukon in mid september so she could finally meet my dad. We stayed at a house rental on Lake Laberge about 40 minutes north of Whitehorse (yukon capital) where I grew up for my teenage years. It was about 3500 miles total trip.
here we go.
First night on the road

mills in Quesnel BC, first morning on the road.

Firehouse Smithers, BC

statue in Smithers, Smithers is at the base of the mountains seen here.

about an hour north of smithers

shot by tha wife while cruising thru the night

fall coulours creeping everywhere as we head north

misty morning

love my 50/1.8

forestfire 1998 Fox Lake recovering

behind the place we spent a night in Carcross Yukon

same spot, next morning fresh snow on sept 22nd.

first morning in the yukon

yukon sceane

the house on lake laberge

lake laberge sunset

same shot modified

so we headed towards home on sept 28th, and were snowed in 5 hours south and spent the night here. the snow doesn't look to bad the next morning, but the night before the road conditions and visibility were pretty bad and not worth the effort.

none of my buffalo shots worked out too well, but it was good practice.

mountain sheep

and we left the snow behind

here we go.

shalooby , boom diada boom diada ( that won't make sense unless you've seen the discovery channel commercial)
wndrlst it is very beautiful although the winters are 7-8 months with stretches of -40C here and there. and unfortunately the closest we came to out door recreation was bush parties in the looooong summer nights, it's the "land of the midnight sun" they like to say.
outlaw06 I'm using a nikon D90 (new to the photo thing in august) with most shots on the 18-55 vr kit lens. as you can see I'm still finding my way when it comes to pp my photos, luckily I shoot raw so I can go back and redo shots as learn new tricks and sublties.

Nikon has invested millions in the research and technology that goes into their cameras. Trust them!
thanks everybody, it was an awesome drive. roads were empty 80% of the trip, I was able to actually use my cruise control with out people constantly passing me and then slowing down.
izzy, ya I had a 09 TL loaner when I tool the RL in for some service in the spring, the wife and I took it for a short day trip. very nice.
shalooby I think that's almost word for word what you said in an earlier thread, I take it you prefer to shoot in large fine jpeg and go straight to print? or do you print raw formats straight off the camera?
hmmm, I dunno man, I know I'm amateur at pp right now but I'll learn restraint and subtly with practice. and printing straight from the camera just sounds kinda boring, but hey it's all new to me and I enjoy pp still.
jupiter I took around 1500 shots, so I went back and looked to see what else I had and found this one

I've always heard that Yukon is an awesome place to visit if you're into nature and exploring! I'd love to visit.
I'm very interested and curious to know what it was like to grow up there...Please tell me about your experiences living in Whitehorse, especially during winter. Does everyone pretty much know everyone?

thanks Dan
Street Spirit, the yukon is awesome place to visit for the vast clean wilderness for all things outdoors. just go in the summer, or late summer like we did and I think you'll get the most out of it. the only reason tourist travel there in the winter is for the northern lights. which we saw on drive into the yukon on the night of sept 20th, then again at the house on the lake later in the week, which reminds me to post some of those shots.
whitehorse the city is a hole, sorry but it has to be said. they have their issues as a community, but as a visitor you'll get alot of poor food and things in the north are pretty grubby these days. I'm no snob, I lived a rough lifestyle as kid there and have many good friends still there. but they have left the city of whitehorse for smaller communities surrounding. basically crack came to town and with it people from my current city that brought a more violent form of business to a small town. meth is just starting to arrive, depressing I know. however,it's a nice town to walk around and see the wall murals they've recently painted, and the now have a paved path along the river that runs by downtown. there are no decent hotels, that's why we rented a house out of town. it worked out well because we took my dad out for a couple of days and had friends over all the other days, it was a very busy week.
so sum it up, yes go you will love it. find a nice rental cabin or house out of the city. go between may and october.
ok northern lights, my first time shooting them, and I'm pretty noob on the dslr still. pretty disappointing generally, these few are the closest to good shots out of more than fifty

Beautiful shots of some beautiful country side. Makes me want to take a road trip. Really makes me want to wax my car though. I had planned on doing it tomorow, but I got roped into helping my buddy fix his weed eater instead. I've got half a mind to just walk mine over there and tell him to bring it back when he's done.
