And speaking of the gear Dan just mentioned, here's a setup with the Manfrotto Magic Arm and the small Lumiquest soft box. I just happened to remember it because it was on the same forum page as the goofy DIY ring flash adapter I posted in the random thread.

Late this spring/early summer I'm FINALLY going to purchase a lens with some reach. I'm just waiting until the next round of Canon rebates surfaces.
I'm planning to pick up a 70-200 f/4 non-IS.

My question is: What filter(s) should I purchase along with this lens? I'm thinking UV and Circular Polarizer, I'm just not sure what brand, quality etc. Some filters can get quite pricey.

My current kit is a Rebel XT with 18-55 kit lens and 50 f/1.8.
I'd REALLY like to pick up a 7D, but know that I should spend on glass first.

One thing about filters, you don't want to buy a good lens and put a cheap filter on it. I wouldn't worry about a UV filter, unless you plan to shoot were there's a lot of sand, dirt or water being blown around, a lens hood should be enough protection.

As far as brands B+W, Hoya Pro 1 Digital, there's a place in Hong Kong that had really good prices, can't remember their name now, they changed it. They use to have much cheaper prices than amazon or B&H Photo, but not so much anymore.

For the 70-200 you'll need a 77mm filter.

He's looking at the f4 version, which has a 67mm size, the f2.8 using a 77mm.

So my workhorse 17-55 f/2.8 IS is in for a cleaning and a tune-up and I'm probably going to sell it when I get it back. I have been super happy with the optical performance and the stabilizer, but I'm likely going to move to a full frame camera in the next 12 months. Since it will be in tip-top shape when I get it back, it makes sense to put it up for sale now instead of when I get the next body.

I have been shooting with my 85mm and 100mm primes quite a bit lately, so I'm leaning towards a 35mm 1.4 or maybe a 24mm 1.4 to replace my zoom. I like the smaller size of primes and their fast apertures, but I would obviously lose a bit of flexibility if I'm only going to bring one lens with me. With either of these lenses, I would probably look to add a 50mm when I get a new body.

The alternative is to go with either the 24-70 or 24-105, but I owned the 24-70 before and wasn't blown away by it. The 24-105 is of course an f/4 lens, which would be 3 stops slower than the primes but it has the stabilizer that would make up that difference in static low-light scenes.

I've sold off quite a bit of gear to focus just on the stuff I use regularly, so my lens lineup right now looks like this: 10-22, 17-55, 85, 100, 70-200

So what would you guys choose to replace the 17-55?

when i get my lazy ass too it, im selling my 17-55 and am going to replace it with a 24-70..

i like the idea of shooting primes, but if/when i do shoot, its mostly the type of stuff where it would be a big hassle to switch lenses all the time

Dan, I think the 24-105 could make you pretty happy. Truly, my only complaint about it is the f/4, and I don't think you typically shoot wide open specifically to limit the DoF as often as I do. As you say, shutter speed-wise you have the IS to compensate. I'd at least pick one up as a rental before deciding.

Aside from that, I'm shooting with my 50 pretty regularly and loving it. It's a little long on the cropped sensor, but I like tight compositions, so it suits me. I could so easily be convinced to grab a 35 also - with cropped or full frame. I'm using my zooms less and less all the time. Except the 10-22 - I don't see giving that one up. If anything, I'm tempted to swap it for the Tokina f/2.8....but I digress.

I think my shooting style has changed a lot over the years because I hardly ever use the 10-22 any more. I find it hard to get an interesting composition that wide. Sometimes you need it for a big group shot or something, but it has been pretty rarely used in the last year. It would probably be my next lens to go.

That actually makes me think that maybe I should sell the 10-22 and the 17-55 then get the 24-105 and a 35mm 1.4.

I'm sitting here thinking about how I usually compose when I use the 10-22. Not only am I right up on the subject (often as close as focal distance will allow), but I'm also usually down low either lying on the ground or crouching really, really close to the ground. I then tried to mentally put you there... I can see why you don't like it oh-ginormous-one!!

I don't use it often, but it's irreplaceable to me when I do want it!

The 17-55 is on my cameras 90% of the time. If I was to replace it, I'd pick the 35mm 1.4L.

That said, if you're going FF and you don't shoot ultrawide, why not sell the 17-55 & 10-22 and get the 35 1.4L and 50 1.2L?

I would definitely add a 50mm again for when I moved to FF. I've had the 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 before, so I guess the 1.2 is the next natural move. The Zeiss 50mm is also interesting to me, but only on FF because I find it a little too hard to manual focus through the viewfinder on my 50D.

He's willing to do it for $585. That's better right? It comes with Original box, front/rear cap, hood, and pouch.

Really?? dang..

I had all those auto-notifiers on all the major online shops for this lens for the past 2-3 months but nothing came up yet.

I think I'm just going to order it, just too sick of waiting for them to restock them. And when I called this huge camera store in LA, they said they don't think its going to be released for some reason.

Lens Advice

Ok my wife is pregnant with our first child (). I currently have a XTi with the lens kit. I am getting better but still a long way where I want to be with my shots.

Now I know I will be going crazy with the camera so I am wanting to pick up a 50mm 1.8 for sure but not sure on a zoom or a wide angle for the outside pictures or for anything else

Anyone want to shoot me some suggestions. I am thinking the budget will be 500-800 for a decent glass.

Thanks

The 50mm 1.8 for my 40D is letting me down...

I am in a smaller hotel room and I have only the 50mm with me, and I cannot take good pics of the room due to the 1.6x50mm.

I need to buy the 17-55. Any ideas on when they may come off of full price for new?

Just bite the bullet and buy it. Used if necessary.
That said, consider taking shots with the 50 to be stitched later.

have you considered the 15-85mm IS USM? it may not be as fast as the 17-55mm but it more than makes up for the extra reach and extra wide. plus the optics are almost as good as the 17-55.

I have rented and used the 17-55 and loved it, but don't know anything about the 15-85. Will have to look into it. I REALLY was looking forward tot he f2.8, though, so slower glass is not really appealing to me.

its fairly decent as an all around lens. I use it more often now than my 17-55mm F/2.8 just because of the reach. the build is better than the 17-55 and feels much more solid. i dont miss the speed much as the IS is more than adequate, plus the 50D and 7D can push the ISO if need be.

overall its a nice walk-around, general-purpose lens. and its quite reasonable in price.
