The only thing that worries me about that it the warranty. I don't think you get a full year as you would get buying new. But I would have to look into it for sure.

Thinking about getting the 50mm 1.8...Pretty sure the answer is yes but you never know. Worth it?

For about US$80 it's definitely a worthwhile lens. It's not the fastest/best focusing lens, but it's pretty sharp and fun for playing with DOF/bokeh. It's also pretty good for portraits.

Main use will be shooting pics of the kids. Still using the 18-55 kits lens so something sharper would be nice.

And I still don't use the camera often enough to warrant spending more.

If you can get them to sit still or slow them down, then this lens is will work well. It's just not great for tracking running kids. Plus, on a crop body, your field of view will be pretty narrow, so you'll need to back up to get full body shots.

Mainly just for indoors. X-Mas, B-Day etc, when they're more or less stationary. I learned the hard way this past summer/fall that I still don't really have a lens suitable for getting action shots of the kids. The 55-250 isn't fast enough.

The 50/1.8 is a bargain. It doesn't have any frills, but it has good image quality for the price. The don't call it the "Plastic Fantastic" for nothing.

Dom, I used this exclusively for my trip over Thanksgiving, and while it does live up to it's reputation, the crop factor made it difficult to get a lot of shots in my sisters house. It was an older house, so none of the rooms were giant, and the 50*1.6 (80mm) lens was difficult to work with for trying to get a table full of guests.

On the other hand, it is a great lens to play with, and for more static subjects, has given me some really great shots.

Browse through the flikr group for the nifty fifty and see what kind of shots come out well with the 50mm.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered it and should be getting it tomorrow. $96 taxes in.

They look great, but notice there aren't a lot of the "action" type shots of kids. Lots of static shots and portraits.

Yup. No plans to chase the kids around with this lens. But it should make getting X-Mas pictures easier.

so ive decided im going to switch my 17-55 to the 24-70 2.8.

there have been far to many times where i wish i had the reach between 55mm and 70mm.

i am going to miss that IS.

If anyone is interested, I have my Sigma 30mm 1.4 on eBay. If it doesn't sell, I'll put it here in the BM. Its for Nikon.

I'm about the purchase either the Sigma 30mm f1.4 or the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG lens. Both are under $450 and are of the build quality of my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8, which I love.

I'm just not sure about the image quality of the 24-70mm at f2.8. Many people have said it is soft, but I'm looking for a fast lens I can carry around for general purpose. I also like the zoom range since it will be replacing my 18-55mm kit lens.

If f2.8 is unusable, the 30mm prime might be the better choice.

Is there a similar site for Nikon equipment? I am just curious

I really like my Canon, but I have VERY little invested in it, so when I do decide to upgrade I can keep my options open.

IF that lens comes out, it will likely be heavier than the current "brick" and cost another $300-$500 on top of the non-IS price.

the brick is already damn heavy.

but hey you never know maybe they developed the optics better so it can be lighter?

isnt the new 800mm lens slightly shorter and the same weight as the 600mm?

If you are shooting crop bodies, I still think the 17-55 is a better option. The IQ between the two is going to be negligible.

If you don't mind used, you can usually find them for around $1500.

But I think all lenses have been going up. I believe it's mainly because of the dollar vs yen exchange rate.

You used to be able to find it for right at about 1600....now it's around 1900.

lol

I think that's the next lens I'm gonna save up for, but hell, if it keeps going up, who knows.
And I'm not opposed to used. I just appreciate someone who takes extremely well care of their stuff like myself.

Question about primes. Obviously, the main advantage to primes is they can be faster than zooms. But is there much or any advantage if you are not shooting primes at apertures lower (faster) than those on a zoom? i.e. if you are shooting at ISO 100, 50mm, f 8, is there really much image quality difference between the 50 1.2 L and say, the 24-104 f4 IS?

I'm not really planning on switching any time soon, but just wondering if there is really a valid reason for people to switch other than "It makes me think about composition more".

Amazon still has it listed for $1699.

And I've been pretty lucky with used lenses. I sold two (17-40 f4 and 70-200 f4) and bought 3 (70-200 f4 IS, 85 1.8, 10-22). No issues with any of them. This has been through both POTN and FM.

I'm no expert, but even at same apertures, I'm sure die hards would argue that the prime is optically better since the entire lens is designed around that one focal length. Now could I tell the difference?? Probably not.

$1900, where are you looking? Local retail? Never buy local retail, unless you need same day.

Yes, the primes will be sharper.

Used a Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for a few weeks during Spring Break.

Lived up to its expectations. Very impressed with its performance.
