someone was selling a canon 50mm f/.95 on craigslist locally. It was remounted to a leica M-mount though. I don't think there is a converter for the leica M-mount to EF?

I wanted to go check it out anyways. That would be awesome, if you could get it to work. I haven't heard much about the optics of it though. Seems like it would be much easier to just use the 50 f/1.0L.

Tamron announces 15x zoom lens
Wednesday, 30 July 2008 08:55 GMT

Superzoom specialist Tamron has today announced the development of its most ambitious lens yet, the characteristically snappily-titled AF 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro. Designed exclusively for digital SLRs with APS-C sensors, this optic offers a 35mm-equivalent range of 28-419* mm, perfect for owners of megazoom compacts looking to upgrade to an SLR, and incorporates the company's 'Vibration Control' optical image stabilisation system. To achieve the spectacular zoom range (billed as the longest in the world),Tamron has used all its design nous, including the use of aspheric elements and low dispersion glass to keep chromatic aberration under control.

The company has not yet announced pricing or availability information. It will initially only be available in Canon and Nikon mounts. *35mm-equivalent focal length ranges will be 27mm - 405 mm on Nikon and 29mm - 432mm on Canon.

Press Release:
TAMRON announces the development of the AF18-270MM Di II VC ULTRA HIGH POWER ZOOM LENS

A Technological Breakthrough—World’s Longest Range 15X Zoom Lens Has Exclusive Built-In Vibration Compensation Mechanism Optimized for Consumer Digital SLR Cameras

July 30, 2008, Saitama City, Japan — Tamron Co., Ltd., under the leadership of Mr. Morio Ono, President, has announced the development of a unique ultra high power zoom lens—the Tamron AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO (Model B003), the first1 digital SLR lens in the world that delivers a remarkable zoom ratio of 15X (28-419mm equivalent) and is equipped with a highly effective Vibration Compensation (VC) mechanism. Designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras with APS-C sized image sensors2, the new lens delivers outstanding image quality over its entire zoom range and its exclusive VC anti-shake system facilitates sharp handheld photography even at the longest telephoto settings.

With its vast zoom-range, the Tamron AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC lens enables the user to cover virtually any photographic subject from wide angle to ultra telephoto simply by turning the zoom control. It covers angles of view equivalent to 28mm to 419mm when converted to the 35mm format3. In addition, this breakthrough lens is equipped with Tamron’s exclusive, proprietary tri-axial Vibration Compensation (VC) mechanism that eliminates or substantially reduces the effects of handheld camera shake. As a result, the user can enjoy the convenience of handheld photography in virtually any situation, from shooting candid images, to covering sporting events, to news photography, without worrying about camera shake having an adverse effect on image quality. The new lens will be made available in Canon and Nikon mounts. The price and launch date of the new lens will be announced at a later date.

Well, so much for signature deliveries with UPS. I tracked the package from my computer at work and saw it was delivered this afternoon. Looks like the driver forged my sig (I had left a note on the front door asking them to call me and I'd come home and sign for it, since I work 5 minutes away, but they never called). I guess the bright side is now I don't have to go to the customer service center tonight to pick it up.

I live in a safe neighborhood, but you just never know what can happen. And the thought of my new 17-55 lens sitting out on the front porch with the potential of thunderstorms this afternoon makes me cringe.

Luckily when I bought my 70-200, they didn't leave it outside. I had them hold it and I went after work to pick it up at the customer service building. However, I think the UPS workers there were stealing things, because the box my lens was shipped in had a corner just about missing, like it was torn open, and the UV filter was missing. B&H sent another one for me after I showed pics of the damage, but it ticked me off that UPS workers would do that. Some people....

I don't know what they have to do to get their boxes from one place to another, but they sure as hell don't treat them gently. I had rented a lens (10-22 EFs) and a tripod from a place, but they ordered the equipment from B&H and had it shipped directly to me. The box was almost completely open on both sides and there were several small items in the shipment, but every thing on the packing list was still there. I was shocked that nothing "fell out".

Seems like they pretty much beat the crap out of packages. I guess they don't care since they aren't 'their' packages. Four guys at this particular UPS location were just arrested for stealing and selling expensive watches that were shipped via UPS. Idiots.

Where in socal could i rent a 300 or 400 2.8??

i looked at Samy's but they say you need a credit card to cover the cost of the lens.
(is it a deposit or do they just keep it on file for just in case?)

Should be just a deposit. But any place you rent a lens from will require a CC deposit. And I suggest you get the insurance.

It will probably be for close to the cost of the lens, but the charge doesn't go through. It's just an authorization unless you somehow lose the lens. Just ask them.

BTW, congrats on selling the 70-200 f4 so quickly.

Any thoughts on this lens?

http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-70-300mm...9971584&sr=1-1

I'm looking for a decent telephoto lens for my D60 that won't break the bank. I expect by early next year I will be upgrading to the D90... I would prefer one with a motorized since it will integrate nicely with the D60 but for the right price and decent piece of glass I would settle for manual focus as long as it's something I could eventually fit onto the D90.

I'd love to hear what you experts say. I would intend to be shooting mostly sports (hockey in particular) with the telephoto lens.

I'm also interested in a obtaining a decent Macro lens too.

There are definitely better lenses out there, but not at that price point. You really need to be in the $500 range to get something half-way decent at 300mm. You could make it work for hockey, but it will be a struggle to say the least. Hockey is amazingly tough to shoot. It's way darker in those arenas than your eyes would have you believe, and of course it's a very fast sport too.

Ideally, you want a fast aperture to stop the action, and an ultrasonic focus motor to keep the subjects in sight. This lens has neither of those things, so you're going to have to peg your ISO on high and prefocus as much as possible.

If you were shooting daytime baseball, it wouldn't be much of an issue, but if your primary goal is hockey, you might be frustrated with this lens.

I just did a quick search on amazon and that's what came up. $500 price range would be fine, any suggestions? I'm still new to the art of photography so I don't know exactly what to look for. Btw Dan...I've seen your photos and I have just one word... Amazing!

Well, I think you'd be much happier with this guy: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...G_AF_S_VR.html

It has the same max aperture as the sigma lens you linked to earlier, but it has a faster focus motor and vibration reduction. You're still going to need to use high-iso when shooting hockey to freeze the action, but at least hand shake will be gone and you'll actually have a fighting chance at focusing on something.

Oh, and thanks for the compliment.

^^So i'm pretty sure i'm going to be picking up this lens as soon as stock becomes available. I would also like to get a macro lens and after taking a look at some the available lenses i've noticed that some telephoto lenses actually indicate "macro" as part of their description. I'm a bit confused by this since I assumed macro was for close-up photography and telephoto was for distance shots. Can anyone explain the benefits of these and whether it's actually better to get a seperate telephoto and macro lens or if I should look for a "combined" lense.

Sorry to seem like an idiot but I'm still learning the photography game and with the prices of glass I want to make sure that whatever I decide to buy will do will help me get the results i'm looking for.

Macro is really just an indication of the maximum magnification of the lens, or more directly, how close it can focus. Sigma uses the term a lot more liberally than others. Normally a macro lens will project an image of a subject that is the same size as the subject. That's called a 1:1 macro lens. In other words, if you were photographing an bug that was 10mm long, the projection of the ant on your sensor would also be 10mm long. If you had a 1:2 macro, the ant would only be projected half as large, so it would only be 5mm long. Conversely, a 2:1 macro would enlarge the ant to 20mm.

The Nikon 70-300 you're looking to buy will magnify up to 1:4, so the ant would be 2.5mm long. You can increase the magnification of any lens by using an extender or you can decrease the focusing distance with extension tubes.

Suggestions on a long (400mm) lens for low light work. Like dusk-ish low light to just after dusk low light.

I may need to rent something, but everything looks f4 or higher. Does canon make a 400mm f2.8?

EDIT: NVM I found it...

I don't remember what system you shoot with, but Nikon and Canon both make excellent macros. You really can't go wrong with any of them in the lineup. The Sigma 150 and 180 are also fantastic. The more telephoto you go, the better subject isolation you get, and the greater the working distance you have to play with.

It's a great lens. SS bought one that I promptly stole from her.

Also try the Sigma 150 as it's the same price and every bit as sharp. Plus it also has the tripod foot included.

Quick question:

I couldn't find a zoom lens simulator that went beyond 200mm, so

I have a 1750 foot span between the subject and the camera (assume 1.6crop)

What FL would I need to be able to produce images containing enough facial detail to ID a person/read small signs painted on the side of a vehicle/etc.?

^^ Holy stalker/paparazzi alert.

And you're talking more than a 1/4 mile. You'll need something pretty damn long. Just guessing, but I'm guessing at least 600mm x 1.6.
