I actually like the nostalgic design but for that price? I'd rather get a D800

I just read that it has the same sensor as the D4. Suddenly the price doesn't sound so bad.

For what? You aren't getting the speed...which is the D4s real strong suit.
We've all had this debate before...on paper the D4 is much better is high ISO...but thats taking in to account the D4 and the D800 at FULL RES out put.
Since almost no one will be outputting the d800 anywhere near full res....the high iso capabilities sudden come very close if not on par with the D4.
So for the same price...the D800 gives you more options and more flexibility.
Again...aside from a cool design I don't get the point of this camera.

All I'm saying is if it has a pro body sensor in it, I'm ok with it costing what it does. Earlier, I had said I thought the price was too high. This camera is going to be making some fantastic images.

The question isn't how will this camera perform.
The question is why is Nikon making this a full sized, heavy DSLR when they pretty have this field covered.
Why isn't this camera coming out a smaller/lighter competitive mirror less body that competes more fully with the GX7, XE1, NEX7, etc...

this is a niche camera, it's not meant to compete with anything else. in my opinion.

This is a retro styled dslr that will potentially cannibalize size within Nikon's line up. Rather than make a real niche camera or something that completes on a level with the other pro mirrorless cameras with larger sensors.
Unless there is a piece of information missing from the official announcement...this move is just boggling.

Yeah I've been reading it...its a smaller body than I thought...and weighs 1.68lbs....almost as much as an iPad (non-Air)
That could be its winning virtue.
Edit:...nope

In your hands the Df doesn't really feel much smaller than Nikon's other full frame SLRs - don't be fooled by its shape into thinking it's somehow petite.

final thought from dpreviews first impressions
As such, although I hate to say it: from a cold, hard practical point of view, I can't shake the feeling that the Df is a little bit... silly. Hardcore Nikon fans will point to the support for 50 year-old non-Ai lenses, which is valid, but I suspect that the constituency of photographers for whom this is a real selling point is vanishingly small. Of course, I could be wrong. Naturally, there will be some photographers who will see the Df purely in terms of a lower-cost shell for the D4's very capable sensor, and might not care about the design.

You can't change focusing screens, so you can't put in a split prism focusing screen. Not that manual focus friendly... Bummer.
And using pre-Ai seems to be a pain, you have to manually adjust the lens to the aperture you want, then tell the camera what you're using so it can meter properly.

Just putting this here
http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compa...(brand3)/Nikon
For me, I don't have old pre-Ai nikon glass.
I'd rather get a D610 for 1999 and use the $750 saved over the Df and put it to some nice glass.
Again for me.

wait, the Df isn't a mirrorless, why does the thread title say "FF mirrorless"? Is there another body rumored?

rumors of D800s coming in June.

[h=2]Rumor: Nikon’s D800/D800E Replacement is Coming in June[/h] [LIST] [*] DL Cade · May 20, 2014
It looks like we have at least one major camera announcement to look forward to in June, courtesy of Nikon. According to Nikon Rumors, the followup to the popular D800/D800E DSLRs is set to arrive that month (NR is calling it the D800s), and there’s even a spec list to throw at you in the meantime.
The update, it seems, will be just that… an update. Like the D4s, the so-called D800s will be a minor upgrade that might not tempt many D800E owners to drop the cash.
Like the D800E, it will sport an AA-filterless 36MP sensor, only with better moire suppression software built in. It is also said to contain an Expeed 4 (or 4a) image processor, sRAW, improved shooting in low light, the same AF improvements as the D4s, 5fps continuous shooting (6fps with the battery grip), and a price somewhere around $3,000.
There’s also the mention of 4K video, but that is classified as “unlikely.”
Like the D4s, the D800s (if that’s what it’s actually called) would be more of a minor upgrade than a full-fledged overhaul.
The update will supposedly be announced by Nikon at the end of June, so there’s still a full month and a bit until we find out if these specs are accurate, but several sources have sent Nikon Rumors the same information, so chances look good.
As always, stay tuned and we’ll be sure to bring you updated info just as soon as it officially launches or unofficially leaks… whichever comes first.

Some more info
Nikon will announce a new full frame DSLR camera this summer (I call it D800s, but the name could be different). As previously reported, the new camera will be based on the D800E (without AA filter) and will contain few small updates (similar to the D4->D4s refresh). Here is an updated list of specifications:
36MP sensor
No low pass (AA) filter (just like the D800E, this time Nikon will only introduce one model without the AA filter)
Improved software to suppress moiré
Expeed 4 imaging processor (they may call it Expeed 4a)
Higher resolution LCD screen
sRAW
4k video is unlikely
Same AF improvements like in the D4s
Improved low light capabilities: one stop better ISO performance
4 centre autofocus points
Built-in GPS
No Built-in Wi-Fi
5 fps (6fps with the MB-D12)
The new camera will be lighter (compared to the D800/D800E)
The price is expected to be higher than the D800E ($3,296.95)
The official announcement is expected for June (most likely at the end of June)
Since I received matching information from multiple sources, I am now rating this rumor with 80% probability (it was 50% before).
