Nikon: Rumor Thread

Nikon would be stupid to go so high and compromise their low light, low noise abilities.
Guess we'll see. I don't think Im going to drop my D3 anytime soon though.

It'll be impressive if they manage the latitude (better than the current d700/D3s) while carrying such high MP...(which would kill their small d3x market im sure)

Agreed, thus why I said it was a small market...probably very low number of cameras made...no loss to kill the body to make room for a broader segment.

If it is going to be 36MP the pixels will be very small and that will adverse effect lattitude {smaller bucket gathering less rain}.

^ It's in reference to the dynamic range.
If that's still vague, follow this link: http://www.photographyicon.com/blog/...dynamic-range/

Nikon D4 specs:
Nikon D4 specs: 16.2MP, 11 fps, 102,400 native ISO, XQD memory card
By [NR] ADMIN | Published: DECEMBER 11, 2011
I was able to collect some specs from several sources for the upcoming Nikon D4 camera. The [NR] rating on those specs is 90% which means this is the real deal with maybe some small details being wrong possibly due to wrong translation.
Nikon D4 specs:
16.2 MP
11 fps
100-102,400 native ISO range, expandable to 50 and 204,800
CF + XQD memory card slots! That's right, the Nikon D4 will have the new Compact Flash XQD memory card slot.
Compatible with the new Nikon WT-5 wireless transmitter
Integrated Ethernet in the camera
Face detection/recognition function that will be working in the viewfinder (maybe some type of a hybrid viewfinder? Nikon had several related patents)
Improved video, I have no other details on that but my guess is 1080p/30/25/24 and 720p/60/30/25/24 similar to the Nikon D800
Uncompressed video out through the HDMI port
Ability to assign the two buttons on the front of the camera to smooth aperture control during video recording
Improved 51 AF points
AF detection range will go down to EV-2.0 (the D3s went to EV -1)
Autofocus system: 9 cross-type sensors that are operational up to f/8
The Nikon D4 is clearly made to compete with the Canon EOS 1Dx. I will stay conservative on the announcement date, but there is a very good chance that the Nikon D4 will be announced right before or during the PMA show in Las Vegas (January 10-13, 2012).
With the next round of pro DSLR cameras I think Nikon will make a clear separation of the D800 and D4. This is why they will probably announce both cameras around the same time in 2012. The D4 will have low MP count, high fps, high ISO. The D800 will have high MP count, low fps, lower ISO. This is a clear differentiation from the previous D3/D700 offering that shared the same sensor/technology.

Updated Nikon D800 specs
By [NR] ADMIN | Published: DECEMBER 16, 2011
I am now 99% confident that the remainingunconfirmedspecs from thisNikon D800 postand theD800 picturesare real. Here is the updated list:
36 MP sensor (7360x4912)
100% viewfinder coverage
Improved AF with face recognition– the D800 will still have 51 points AF point
CF+SD memory card slots
USB 3.0
ISO range: 100 – 6400, ISO LO @ 50 and ISO HI-2 @ 25600
The screen will be larger than 3 inches (probably 3.2 in.)
The D800 will not have built-in GPS
Expeed 3 processor
There will be two different D800 versions/models, one with the antialiasing filter removed
4 fps continuous shooting, about 6 fps in DX mode with optional battery pack
Video modes: 1080p/30/25/24 and 720p/60/30/25/24
Headphone jack, can input from an external device such as a PCM sound recorder
86k pixels RGB sensor
200,000 shutter cycles
Uncompressed HDMI video out (just like the Nikon D4)
Still no idea about the exact D800 announcement date.

Cropped Nikon D800 samples at high ISO
By [NR] ADMIN | Published: DECEMBER 17, 2011
I have mentioned before that I have several samples taken with the upcoming Nikon D800 camera. The TIFF files produced by the Nikon D800 are around 103 MB:
Unfortunately I cannot publish the entire images online but I can show you few JPG crops taken at different ISO settings. It's not much, but at least you can get some idea about the ISO performance. I already mentioned that with the D4 and D800 Nikon will make a clear separation in the target audience for those cameras. With its high resolution, the D800 will be for the landscape/studio photographers, where the D4 will have the speed and low light performance for photo journalists/sports shooters. This is a clear differentiation from the previous D3/D700 models that shared the same sensor/technology.
Here are five 100% crops taken at ISO 500, 1400, 3200, 6400 and Hi-1 (I do not have samples taken at other ISO settings). Keep in mind that those were probably taken with a pre-production D800 camera:

I have to make a correction to the Nikon D4 specs: the ISO sensitivity range of the D4 will be100-12,800 and not 100-102,400as initiallyreported. Sorry about that, it got lost in the translation! The ISO range will still beexpandable to 50 and204,800.
For comparison, the Nikon D3s has ISO range of 200 - 12,800, expandable to ISO102,400.

It's entirely likely this time since PMA is at the same time as CES which officially starts the week after the 6th.
Also Nikon is scheduled for a press conference that date.

Nikon press conference on January 6th, 2012 in Thailand
By [NR] ADMIN | Published: DECEMBER 28, 2011
Nikon will have a press conference in Nikon's headquarters in Thailand on January 6th, 2012 under the slogan "The image you are waiting for". I already mentioned that Nikon will announce the D4 and a new AF-S 85mm f/1.8G lens on January 6th, 2012. There is also a chance that some of the other upcoming Nikon products on this list might be announced for the 2012 PMA show.

I guess the world ended....
Nikon D4: $6,000, Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.8G: $500
The first article about the Nikon D4 appeared briefly online today. The article was dated January 10, 2012 - this may be the actual release date to the public. The January 6th press event could just be to introduce the camera to the press. I cannot publish the entirearticle, but here are someinterestingnew specs (the initial Nikon D4 specs were correct with the exception of the ISO range):
Nikon D4 will have substantially lighter body
Available in February
Suggested retail price:$6,000
The ISO range is listed again as100 to 102,400, expandable to 50 to 204,800. Those were the original D4 specs I published back in December but then I had to correct them. I guess I was wrong in my correction.
91,000-pixel RGB metering sensor
Face detection/recognition
100% viewfinder coverage (obviously)
Illuminated function buttons
Dedicated video button
Includes H.264 B frame compression
Contrast detect AF in movie recording
Low-pass filter for video recording
Smooth aperture feature for video recording
Nikon D4 is not produced inThailand
The price of the newNikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.8G lens will be $500.
As expected, the Nikon D800 will not be announced now since it was not mentioned in the article.

D600 rumors:
The price of the D600 is rumored to be very low - maybe as low as $1500.
The sensor inside the D600 will probably be 24MP (made by Sony, modified by Nikon).
The D600 will probably not have an internal AF motor, which means it will work only with AF-S lenses (just like the D3200 and D5100).
The D600 will have HD video.
Announcement before Photokina (September 2012)

It's a very intriguing possibility but switching for me personally would mean I'd have to invest in FF lenses as most of my current lenses are DX so it would be more than just the cost of getting a new FF body. (I could just use the crop mode but then that wouldn't use the true potential of full frame)
