New to photography

Hey guys,

I just wanted to say hello. I just picked up a Nikon D40x to play with so hopefully I can learn how to use it properly. I know its a basic, entry level DSLR but thats exactly what I need.

My sister has a Canon XSi so maybe I can swap with her

Anyway, hello! My first set of pictures will probably come from HIN: Night Shift in Chicago... can't wait!

Jason

Were you broke before or after you bought the cam?

It's an expensive hobby, I can't wait to make the jump to a DSLR, but right now I still shoot film. I'm sure the D40x is a great cam. Let's see some pics!

I'll up the ante even further. Any Peterson book is highly recommended, including "Learning to See Creatively" and "Understanding Shutter Speed." If anything, they are entertaining to read, especially if you're a photography geek.

I might get the "Seeing creatively" book.
Even if you have the best settings and everything, if you don't have a good composition, the shot can be

Awesome Book. This book will answer many questions you might have in regards to getting the shot you're looking for. I purchased the D60 not too long ago and probably already wish I would have opted for the D80. I love the camera though and still very much a beginner. Good luck and as I've learned the best way to learn how to use the camera is to get out there and begin shooting. Can't wait to see your shots

First pictures!

^ Eh, who likes punctuation anyway. I would've put the comma after better.

Anyway, here are some shots I just took. I know they aren't very good at all but Theres only one way to go when you're a beginner right??

1. My dog, Brutus. AUTO mode

2. Brutus yet again. AUTO mode

3. Brutus... last one, I promise! AUTO mode

4. Pine tree. AUTO, MACRO

5. My car. MANUAL, f/9, 1/50sec, ISO400

6. Car. MANUAL, f/9, 1/50sec, ISO200

7. Nature doing its thing. MANUAL, f/5.6, 1/60sec, ISO400

8. Random dying flower. MANUAL, f/5.6, 1/40sec, ISO400

So... thats it!

^^ Those are very good for your first time out with the camera. You have a pretty good eye and you must have some really steady hands to be shooting at such slow shutter speeds.

Hmmm well, thanks! I don't really know how to adjust the shutter speed... I just took like 3-4 shots of the same thing and posted the "best" one.

And the missing letter is F, as in Read The Effing Manual... I read mine front to back, all three languages before I pressed the shutter.

That looks awesome! I almost feel like I belong here. Haha
Question. I assume you did that in PS. Did you just duplicate layer, make it B&W and erase away the center portion?

JM.. on that last picture of the dying flower what was your settings? The aperture on that image looks incredible! This is probably one of my favorite features of the camera...it's taking me a little while to master it though...

edit: ugh! I'm such an idiot.. I didn't see the settings above the pic the first 20 times I scrolled down lol
