Need to upgrade the Rebel XT (T1i or 50D?) and new lens.
Yes, another which one do I choose post, but I'm really stuck with the introduction of video in a DSLR. Other than the T1i badged as a Rebel and the more noticable differences in the max shutter speed (1/4000 to 1/8000), fps speed (3.4 to 6.3) and flash synch (1/200 to 1/250), is it overall comparable to the 50D due to the T1i having video and the 50D not? Is the micro focus that needed or just nice to have? I want an updated camera, and the thought of just having video available is stuck in my head as it looks like all cameras will have this feature. The 7D is out of my price range and it would be nice to get out of an "entry level" camera, but I really only take pics of my kids (getting into more action, soccer and indoor gymnastics) and random stuff. I have taken some events and weddings, but just because I was asked to do so.
T1i- $704.00
50D- $999.00
Also, looking at a lens and I know someone here has a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. To just have a lens that I'm not getting paid for pictures, is the Sigma a good lens or is the Canon non IS 70-200 f/2.8 way better? I know a lens will last through body upgrades, but $500 more in price I could get another lens or a nice tripod or by my wife something to offset the camera purchase!
Sigma- $799.00
Canon- $1329.95
$1500 for T1i and Sigma
$1800 for 50D and Sigma
$2000 for T1i and Canon
$2300 for 50D and Canon
I currently have a Rebel XT
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Canon 75-300 f/4-5.6 III
Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 430 EX II flash
Sunpak Platinum tripod
T1i- $704.00
50D- $999.00

I know alot of people that say that 2.8 isn't enough to door indoor volleyball. They use or would like to use to use a 200mm 2.0.
If doing the indoor sports will be a small protion of what you think you'll shoot. The I suggest going with the 4.0 IS, it is sharper than the 2.8, IS or not. You could always go with a 135mm 2.0 at a later date, if you need for indoor sports.

Definitely ideal. How about a used 70-200 IS? I have no idea on prices, but maybe it would be in your range? It really is a beautiful lens and would work great in the conditions you shoot.
Maybe ask for the lens (used) as a xmas or bday gift?

I'm not sure the IS with a smaller aperture makes sense to me for sports. Sure you can use slower shutter speeds handheld, but with sports, I'd rather have faster glass than IS. Otherwise, you're dragging the shutter and getting motion blur from the players - IS doesn't help you there.

Looking around a used IS is $1,700. Would an f/4 IS be better and more versatile than an f/2.8 non IS? They are about the same price, but it seems like relying on a stabilization wouldn't be as good as pure light.

You should be able to find the 2.8 IS for about $1400 used. If the indoor sports is going to be a lot of what you shoot, you'll need the extra stop. If it's not, then the 4.0 IS, is what I would do. I have owned all four version of this lens, the 4.0 IS is the sharpest.

You get faster autofocus with F2.8 (cross sensors FTW), and faster shutters (but reduced DOF with F2.8)
IS helps for camera shake.
Faster F stop for subject shake.
