Once it warms up, I really have to try taking some moon shots through my scope. It's really a major PIA though compared to "regular" photography.

Pretty damn impressive for a digicam. From my past attempts at moon pictures, I'm guessing that's somewhere around a 450 - 550mm equivalent focal length.

I enjoy taking similar pictures. For these last couple weeks I've been doing the same (see avatar). I just ran outside to grab this one (my zoom isn't as far as Donte's):

canon 20D
shutter: 1/60th
F/11
ISO 100
200mm
RAW
shutter lock enabled

In reference to that grafton/Tufts thread earlier. That campus area in Grafton is perfect for moon & star pictures. The area is very dark with few or no street lights or ambient light from buildings. I went there one night at 2:00 AM because there was a meteor shower reported on the news and when I arrived, there were some 20 cars already there. lol

What kind of telescope do you have? It may require an adapter if you don't already have one.

Thanks guys. The camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30

Sun Diego CL-S I live in Vista and I took the shot from my drive way. There is even this big ass street light right next to my house. So I am surprised the picture even came out ok.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30
Exposure time 1/250 s
f-number f/3.7
ISO 80
420mm
Jpeg

If I took the picture in raw format it would have turned out better but I think the jpeg version looks enough.

I thought I posted some of my sunset pictures in the off topic forum. I did a search and couldn't find it so I guess I didn't. Here is one and sorry if I did post them before.

With most small digicams, the easiest way of doing moon shots is to simply set the camera to focus at infinity (usually landscape mode) and just put it up to the eyepiece of the telescope. It can be tricky to get things lined up so it's almost best to put the digicam on a tripod if you have one. Below is a photo I did back in 2002 employing this method with a low power eyepiece in the scope and my Nikon 995 digicam.

schwinGGG! that looks great, I love looking at the moon. I was 9 when Apollo 11 landed and the moon was visible so I took my telescope out in the front lawn hoping to see the astronauts. Whatta maroon boy

Astronomy can be just as taxing on the wallet as photography. Much worse actually if you do imaging. The top imager in my club probably has about $30K invested in his setup.

I was wandering around London today snapping pics....I was pretty pissed at the vast majority of what I came home with. I thought I had gotten much better stuff.

I will have to crop and do some shit with any of the decent ones I took...There is only one pic that came out really well that I like.

But such is life...I went with the idea of this being an excercise anyway.

to join in on the fun, i have a few pics myself that i've taken with my Canon 10D

this pic (link http://www.typesdragoon.com/albums/A...graphy/aae.jpg)
was taken during and eclipse

eclipse

the eclipse shots were taken with a 300mm

and the moon pics were taken by hooking my camera up to a laptop and AztecRols telescope in his backyard

also took a picture of jupiter that same night. not a very good pic, but it's the planet jupiter and it's moons

i'm saving up to buy a telescope soon, something around $3000 with gps tracking. just bought a new laptop, so i'm close to reaching my goal.

other random pics in my gallery including the famous "lightning pics" http://www.typesdragoon.com/gallery
