Help from the Photo Gurus here....
I need a new camera. I have been struggling with my old POS Sony camera. I have to take a ton of shots to get one that is somewhat OK. And I have to convince my son to sit still for 5 seconds so I can get one that is in focus.
I really wanted to get a DSLR, but I lack the funding right now. So I'm thinking about getting a good, reliable point and click for now. And it seems like I will be in save mode for a while so I'm not just looking for something to bridge the gap. I want something that I can use for a while.
The ones I looked at are the Canon SD1100 and the Nikon Cool Pics S550.
Thanks.

Go with Canon, you'll be happier with them. But you might want to look at the SD890IS or 790IS. It is their newer cameras for this year. They have Motion Detection .
Motion Detection Technology automatically detects subject movement and optimizes exposure control and ISO settings to reduce image blur.

Life doesn't stand still for picture-taking. That's why Canon included its advanced Motion Detection Technology in the PowerShot Digital ELPH. This sophisticated feature works in the background to instantly evaluate how fast your subject is moving. Then it automatically selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings to keep everything looking sharp and clear. When you need higher ISOs for action-stopping shutter speeds, Motion Detection Technology provides it. But when no movement is detected, it allows lower ISOs for excellent color and detail. So whether you're shooting a bride walking down the aisle, a ballet recital or even a child's soccer game, you can relax and shoot with confidence knowing you've got the picture you intended.

Or am I paying more for a 10 MP instead of an 8 MP?

Or am I paying more for a 10 MP instead of an 8 MP?OK, I see it there now. But the kinda hide that for the 1100. The difference between the three are size of screen and focal length of zoom and of course MP. With MP it's the same size sensor in all three, the more you put on them, the more likely to have a nosier picture at high ISO speeds.
Take a look at amazon.com site and read what others have said about the one's you think you might buy.
If this camera turns out the way its supposed to, I'll be ordering it.

Saw that thread earlier. Too expensive for what I am looking for.
Based on a lot of what I have been reading, I think I'm leaning towards the SD1100 IS. I like what I've read about the 790 as well, but I am really used to actually looking through the view finder and there is none with the 790.

Costco has the 1100 for $209 with a 2GB SD card.

Thanks.
It's $207 on Amazon and free shipping. For $224 I'll be able to get the camera, shipping and a 4 gb SD card. It's about the same as Costco and I have some other crap to get on Amazon.

Oops, yeah I forgot its retail is $499, thought it was cheaper. Ah well, can't go wrong with a Canon. My wife has a 750IS, I think. Takes nice shots, even of my son who doesn't stay still.

on Canon. Their P&S's are the best.
